Well now, let me tell ya somethin’ about them sex education films. You know, back in my day, we didn’t have none of that fancy stuff. Learned about the birds and the bees from, well, the birds and the bees, I guess. But times, they’re a-changin’, and now they got these here films, shows, whatchamacallits, to teach the young’uns about…you know…that.
I heard tell of this show, Sex Education it’s called, on that there Netflix thingamajig. Seems like a whole bunch of young folks gettin’ all tangled up, talkin’ ’bout things we wouldn’t even whisper about back then. From what I gather, it’s about this boy, Otis, whose mama is some kind of…uh…sex therapist or somethin’. He kinda picks up on her know-how and starts givin’ advice to other kids at school. Sounds mighty interestin’, though I reckon I’d blush somethin’ fierce watchin’ it.
Now, some folks might say Hollywood ain’t the place to go lookin’ for learnin’, especially about somethin’ so private. But seems like they’re makin’ an effort to shine a light on this…what they call…sexual and reproductive health and rights. That’s a mouthful, ain’t it? Basically, they’re talkin’ about treatin’ each other right, knowin’ your own body, and makin’ good choices.
This Sex Education show, it ain’t just about the mechanics of it all, you know. It’s about talkin’ honest and findin’ someone you can trust. That’s important, real important. Cause back in my day, there wasn’t much talkin’, just a whole lotta hushin’ up and pretendin’ it didn’t happen.
- It’s good, I reckon, that these young folks are learnin’ to be open and honest about their feelin’s and what their bodies are doin’.
- They talk about all sorts of things, from different ways people love each other to makin’ sure you’re safe and healthy.
- And it ain’t preachy, from what I hear. It just shows folks bein’ folks, makin’ mistakes, learnin’ from ’em.
And it ain’t just that one show, neither. There’s other films and things out there, some even use cartoons, imagine that! They call it EasySRE or something, and it’s got a bunch of little movies to help folks understand all about, well, you know. They say these films are “gentle” and show all sorts of different kinds of love and preferences. Now, I don’t know about all that, but it sounds like they’re tryin’ to be respectful, which is more than I can say for some things I’ve seen.
Of course, there’s always gonna be some folks who think it’s too much, too soon. They’ll say it’s corruptin’ the youth and all that. But I reckon it’s better than leavin’ kids in the dark, makin’ ’em figure it all out on their own, like we had to. At least now they got some information, some guidance. Though I still think a good talkin’ to from your grandma is worth somethin’!

I saw a bit of one of these films once, accidental-like, when my grandbaby was watchin’. And wouldn’t you know it, they was showin’ pictures and diagrams and…well, let’s just say I learned a thing or two, even at my age! They was talkin’ about things I didn’t even know there was names for! Makes you wonder what they’ll come up with next.
The important thing, I figure, is that these films are tryin’ to teach respect. Respect for yourself, respect for your partner, and respect for everyone’s differences. That’s somethin’ we could all use a little more of, whether we’re young or old. And maybe, just maybe, if we can all talk a little more openly and honestly about this stuff, it won’t be so scary or shameful anymore.
So, yeah, these sex education films, they might seem a bit scandalous to some folks, a bit too modern for others. But if they help even one young person make a good choice, treat someone with kindness, or understand themselves a little better, then I reckon they’re doin’ somethin’ right. And that’s more than you can say for a lot of things these days.
Anyways, that’s my two cents on the matter. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got a garden to tend to. All this talk about…well, you know…it’s made me a bit flushed.
