“Two branches. One tree.” Sony Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for Karate Kid: Legends, the next big Karate Kid sequel continuing not only the other movies but also the “Cobra Kai” series which is currently on Season 6. Legends is set to land in theaters at the end of May 2025 right in the middle of the summer movie season. Daniel arrives in Beijing, where Mr. Han has been seeking him out. Han has a new protege, Li Fong, who is struggling to let go of the troubles in his past. The two mentors must collaborate to instruct Li Fong, but it remains to be seen if their instructional approaches will be compatible. Li’s martial arts teacher Mr. Han enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown. Starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio from the other movies, introducing Ben Wang as Li Fong, and also starring Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen. This is a slick teaser that actually sets up the characters and stakes in an intriguing way. I haven’t been watching “Cobra Kai” yet – but this first trailer definitely got my attention.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Jonathan Entwistle’s Karate Kid: Legends, direct from YouTube:
After a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown. Karate Kid: Legends is directed by English filmmaker Jonathan Entwistle, making his first feature film after lots of TV work including creating “The End of the F***ing World” series + eps of “I Am Not Okay with This” and “Hello Tomorrow” previously. The screenplay is by Rob Lieber. It’s produced by Karen Rosenfelt & James Lassiter. Executive produced by Jenny Hinkey and Ralph Macchio. Sony will debut Karate Kid: Legends in theaters nationwide starting May 30th, 2025 next summer. First impression? So far so good?
