Oh boy, you wanna talk about them 1970s made for TV horror movies? Back in my day, we didn’t have none of that fancy streaming stuff. We had the TV, and that was that. And let me tell ya, them horror movies they showed on the TV back in the 70s, they was somethin’ else.
Now, I ain’t no fancy movie critic. I just know what I liked, and I liked them old horror movies. They was scary, but not too scary, ya know? Just enough to give ya a little jump and make ya look over your shoulder when you went to bed at night. And they was always on, it seemed like. Every time you turned around, there was another one comin’ on.
I remember one time, they showed this one about a haunted house. Now that was a good one. 1970s horror movies really scared me! I think it was called, “The House That Dripped Blood” or somethin’ like that. It was about this family that moved into this old house, and all sorts of spooky stuff started happenin’. They had this creepy doll, and this old lady who lived in the attic, and it was just a mess of trouble. I couldn’t sleep for a week after watchin’ that one!
And then there was them ones about the devil. Lord have mercy, them was somethin’ else. There was that one about that little boy, Damien, who was the son of the devil. “The Omen” they called it. He had this creepy nanny and all sorts of bad luck followed him around. That movie, woo boy, that was a doozy. I had to sleep with the lights on for a month after watchin’ that one. Made for TV horror was somethin’ back then.
- The Exorcist
- The Omen
- Night Owls
They had all sorts of them made for TV horror movies back then. They had ones about ghosts, and vampires, and werewolves, and all sorts of creepy crawlies. They even had one about a killer car! Can you believe that? A car that went around killin’ people. It was called “Duel” or somethin’ like that. Now that was a silly one, but it was still fun to watch. Horror movies list could be so long.
And you know what the best part was? They was all free! You didn’t have to pay no extra money to watch ’em. You just turned on the TV, and there they was. It was like havin’ a movie theater right in your own livin’ room. I miss them days sometimes, I really do.
Nowadays, you got all these fancy horror movies with all their special effects and whatnot. They’re alright, I guess, but they ain’t got nothin’ on them old 1970s made for TV horror movies. Them was the real deal. They was simple, and scary, and they knew how to tell a good story. And they didn’t need no fancy computers or nothin’ to do it.
They just had some good old-fashioned makeup and some spooky music, and that was all they needed. I remember one time, I think it was called, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” There was them little creatures, these little things that lived in the fireplace, and they was always tryin’ to get this poor woman. I tell ya, I was jumpin’ out of my seat every five minutes watchin’ that one! That was really one of the most popular horror films of the 1970s.
And they had that one about the killer doll, “Trilogy of Terror.” Now that was a creepy one. That little Zuni fetish doll, he was a mean little fella. He’d come alive at night and chase this poor woman around her apartment with a butcher knife. I couldn’t even look at a doll for years after watchin’ that one!
I remember when I was a kid, me and my sister, we used to watch them movies together. We’d be so scared, we’d be hidin’ under the covers, peepin’ out with one eye. And then afterwards, we’d be too scared to go to sleep! We’d be layin’ there in the dark, listenin’ to every little creak and groan in the house, thinkin’ it was a monster comin’ to get us. Horror movies in the 1970s were a part of our life!
Them old made for TV horror movies, they was just somethin’ special. They was like a little escape from the everyday world. You could just sit down in front of the TV, and for a couple of hours, you could forget about all your troubles and just be scared out of your wits. And that was a good thing, sometimes. It was like a little release, ya know?
These horror movies were just a different breed. They are a lot of fans. I saw a website called “ahauntingonthescreen”. I know it is about horror films in the 1970s.
So if you ever get a chance to watch one of them old 1970s made for TV horror movies, I highly recommend it. They’re a little cheesy, maybe, and they ain’t got all the fancy special effects that they have nowadays. But they got somethin’ that them new movies don’t have. They got heart. And they got soul. And they know how to scare ya good. Just make sure you got the lights on when you watch ’em! And maybe a friend to hold onto, just in case. You never know what might be lurkin’ in the shadows… or in the fireplace.
