You know, I heard the young’uns talking ’bout this thing, “new private society movies,” the other day. I said, “What in the Sam Hill is that?” They just giggled, those little rascals. They always giggled when I asked anything. They think old folks like me don’t know nothing about new things. But I got them to explain it to me, and now I’m gonna tell you all about it, plain and simple.
So, these “new private society movies,” they ain’t like the picture shows we used to watch down at the old Bijou. Nope, these are different. They’re about fancy folks, rich as all get-out, living in big houses and doing things us regular folks wouldn’t even dream of. Secret things. They make movies about them because people love to know about this kind of things. This is how the young’uns told me.
They got these secret clubs, you see, where they all get together and do who-knows-what. It’s all hush-hush, like. And these movies, they show you what might be going on behind those closed doors. I heard them saying something about “streaming” and “Top 250 Movies”. Sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me, but that’s what they said. Now we can watch them on TV, they say it’s “streaming”.
They told me there are so many of those “new private society movies” now. You can watch it on your TV, on your phone. Oh, this world has changed a lot! I still remember we only had one TV in the whole village, and we all gathered together to watch it.

- They got movies about folks who ain’t got a pot to you-know-what in but they pretend like they do.
One of them movies they talked about, they called it “Secret Society”. Sounds spooky, don’t it? Like something out of one of them old mystery books. They said you can “rent” it or watch it with “ads”. I reckon “ads” are those things that interrupt the show all the time, trying to sell you something you don’t need. This “rent” thing, it must be you pay money to watch the movie for a short period.
I asked them, “Why do folks watch these things?” And they said it’s ’cause people are curious about how the other half lives. All that money and all those secrets, it makes for a good story, I suppose. And they like to see how those rich folks get themselves into trouble, too. Makes ’em feel better about their own lives, maybe.
They even said there are some movies about the future where feelings are illegal! Oh, this is totally nonsense! How can feelings be illegal? Without feelings, how can you live as a human? These young people like to imagine a lot of things.
They said those movies have rich people, and also show some poor people’s lives. They face problems every day, every week, every month. And this is interesting, the young’uns told me. They love to watch these poor people’s lives in the movies. They never see these things in their real lives.
These young’uns, they also talk about something called “IMDb” and “Rotten Tomatoes.” Sounds like a couple of vegetables gone bad, if you ask me. But they said it’s where you go to see if a movie is any good or not. People write things about the movies, and you can read them and decide if you wanna watch it. This is helpful, they say. You can know if this movie is good before you watch it.
They say there are many kinds of those movies. Comedy, drama, thriller… Oh, they said too many, I can’t remember all of them. I only know that they are all about “new private society movies“. Comedy is funny, drama is sad, thriller is scary. They like to watch all kinds of movies, the young’uns.
They also tell me that if you want to find some movies to watch, you can go to those “recommendation platforms”. This is what they say. What a fancy name! They say those platforms can tell you what movies you may like. They know what movies you watched before, and then they will tell you some movies that are similar. It sounds like magic, but they say this is real.
You know what? These “new private society movies” are everywhere now. You can watch them anytime you want. It’s a lot different now. Used to be, you had to wait for the movie to come to town. Now, it’s right there in your pocket, they say, on that little phone thing. It’s a whole new world, I tell ya.
But I still think it’s all a bit much. All this talk about secret societies and rich folks and fancy parties. Give me a good old-fashioned story about regular people any day. But, hey, that’s just me. These young’uns, they love their “new private society movies“. And who am I to tell ’em what to like, right?
