This Santa Cruz, that place, I heard it has that drive-in movie theater thing. You know, park your car, watch a big movie outside. Sounds kinda fun, right? My old man used to talk about these things, back in the day. Said they was all the rage. Now, seems like they comin’ back.
I was lookin’ around, and folks say that Capitol 6 place, that’s the one in Santa Cruz. They say it’s a good one. You just drive your car in there. Find a spot. I reckon you gotta be careful parkin’. Don’t wanna be too close to the next fella. They say you gotta park right in the middle, between them lines. Leave space on both sides. Like givin’ your neighbor some elbow room, you know?
And get this, they say you gotta wear a mask, like them doctor fellas. When you first drive in, gotta keep that thing on. But once you park your car, you can take it off. I guess that’s so you don’t spread your germs around when you’re walkin’ about. Makes sense, I suppose.
- Drive-In Capitol 6: That’s the big one, everyone talks about it.
- Nickelodeon Theatre: Heard that name, ain’t a drive-in but still shows movies.
- Rio Theatre: Another one that ain’t a drive-in.
- CineLux Scotts Valley Cafe Lounge: Sounds fancy, don’t know if you can drive in though.
Now, about them Santa Cruz drive-in movie theater tickets. I reckon you gotta buy ’em before you go. They say you should buy early, ’cause they run out fast, you see. Everyone wants to go to these things. Popular, they are. Limited spaces, that’s what they say. So if you’re thinkin’ of goin’, don’t wait till the last minute. Get your tickets ahead of time, or you might be out of luck.
I seen some folks talkin’ about the best spots to park. Where to get the best view and all that. Guess it depends on the place. Every place is different. Gotta get there early to get a good spot, I imagine. Just like findin’ a good seat at the church picnic. First come, first served, you know how it is.
And what about snacks? Can you bring your own grub? Some folks say yes, some say no. I guess every drive-in movie theater has its own rules. You might be able to bring your own popcorn and candy. Or maybe they want you to buy from their snack bar. Gotta check the rules before you go. Don’t want to get in trouble for bringin’ your own snacks if they don’t allow it.

They got one in downtown Santa Cruz, they call it Santa Cruz Cinema. 1405 Pacific Ave. That’s what I read. Sounds like a regular movie place, not a drive-in. But they show movies, so there’s that.
Now, they used to have one called Solano Drive-in. Up in Concord. But that ain’t Santa Cruz. Just sayin’. Heard it was a twin screen. That means two movies at once, I reckon.
And listen to this. If you go to one of these drive-in movie theater, the sound comes through your car radio. Ain’t that somethin’? They use some kind of FM transmitter thingamajig. So you gotta have a good radio in your car. If your radio’s busted, you won’t hear nothin’. But they say not to worry, so I guess they got a way around that. Maybe they got speakers or somethin’.
Here’s some things I learned from folks who been to these drive-ins:
- Plan ahead: That’s what they all say. Gotta plan.
- Get there early: For the best spot, you gotta be early.
- Check the snack rules: Don’t get caught bringin’ your own if you ain’t supposed to.
- Make sure your radio works: Or you won’t hear the movie.
Here are some more places around Santa Cruz, they ain’t all drive-ins though:

- CineLux Plaza Theatre: Heard that name.
- Music on the Square: That ain’t a movie, that’s music.
- CineLux Almaden Cinema: Another CineLux.
So there you have it. That’s what I know about that drive-in movie theater in Santa Cruz. Sounds like a good time, if you like that sort of thing. Me, I might just give it a try. Reminds me of the old days. If you go, remember what I told ya. Buy your tickets early, get there early, and check them snack rules. And most important, make sure your car radio works! You don’t wanna miss out on the movie sound, now, do ya?
