This year, I tell you, these young folks, all they talk about is horror movies. They say, “Oh, this one’s scary, that one’s scary.” Back in my day, we didn’t have all these fancy horror movies in New York. We just had good old-fashioned ghost stories, you know? And those were enough to scare the pants off you!
But these kids today, they watch these movies about people getting, you know, chased by monsters and ghosts in New York, and they love it. They even say New York is the best place for horror movies. Can you believe it?
Horror Movies These Days
They got one, what’s it called… Rosemary’s something. About a lady, she’s having a baby, I think, and there’s some devil stuff going on. I don’t know, sounds mighty strange to me. Why would you want to watch something like that? Especially in a big city like New York! And these young people watch it all the time. It’s one of the famous horror movies in New York.
And another one, they call it… The Exorcist. Now that one, that one’s about a little girl, she gets possessed by a demon, or something. A priest has to come and get rid of the demon. I heard it’s real scary. Makes your skin crawl, they say. I don’t know why anyone would want to put themselves through that. It’s not like watching a romantic comedy. But it’s also one of the famous horror movies.
What’s So Scary About New York?
They say these horror movies, they’re scarier because they’re in New York. I guess ’cause it’s a big city, lots of people, lots of dark alleys, you know. But we had dark alleys back home, too. And we didn’t need no fancy New York City to be scared. But you know, everyone is afraid of different things. So, maybe, it’s just the environment that makes those movies popular.
I remember one time, back home, we heard this howling in the woods. Scared us half to death! We thought it was a wolf, or maybe even a ghost. Turns out it was just old man Johnson’s dog, but still! We didn’t need no horror movies in New York to be scared.

Staying In and Watching Movies
These kids today, they like to stay in, watch these horror movies. They make popcorn, turn off all the lights. They say it makes it scarier. When there was a big storm, a Frankenstorm, they said, people stayed in and watched scary movies. I don’t know about that. If there is a big storm outside, I prefer drinking some tea and sleep. Why make your heart racing faster with those horror movies. I guess young people are just different.
Me, I like a nice cup of tea and a good book. Maybe a little knitting. But these horror movies? No, thank you. You won’t find any horror movies on my television. No, sir. But I have to admit, those horror movies are popular these days. And many of them are made in New York.
I remember one time, my granddaughter, she tried to get me to watch one of these horror movies with her. It was about a clown, I think. A scary clown. In New York, no less! I said, “Honey, I’ve seen scarier things in my garden.” And you know what, it doesn’t matter where those stories happened. Scary is scary. New York or not, it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t like it.
Trust No One
They say, in these movies, you can’t trust anyone. Everyone’s out to get you, or they’re a monster in disguise. It’s a rule in those horror movies in New York: trust no one. Well, I guess that’s good advice, even if you’re not in a horror movie. Especially in a big city like New York.
But back home, we knew everyone. We trusted each other. We had to. If you couldn’t trust your neighbor, who could you trust? Maybe that’s why I don’t like these horror movies. They make you suspicious of everyone. You start looking at your neighbor, and you think, “Are you a vampire? Are you a werewolf?” It’s not natural to feel that way.
I guess these young folks, they like the thrill of it. The suspense. The not knowing what’s going to happen next. But me, I like things to be predictable. I like to know that when I wake up in the morning, the sun’s going to be shining, the birds are going to be singing, and my neighbor isn’t going to turn into a zombie. Is that too much to ask?
Horror Movies Are Not For Me
So, these horror movies in New York, they’re just not for me. Give me a good old-fashioned ghost story any day. Or better yet, give me a nice, happy story about a family, or a love story. Something that makes you feel good, not something that makes you want to sleep with the lights on. But if you like those horror movies, especially those happened in New York, I won’t judge. But I will pray for you.
But these kids, they just eat it up. They love it. They can’t get enough of these scary movies. And New York, well, I guess New York is just the place to be if you like to be scared. Or if you like to make movies about people being scared. It’s a strange world we live in, I tell you. A strange world. I still don’t understand why those horror movies in New York are so popular. But people love it.
