This here movie, The New World, you know, it’s been talk of the town lately. Folks keep asking, “Is it true to what happened back then?” Well, I watched it, and I gotta say, it’s a mixed bag, like finding a worm in your apple.

They say this movie, it’s about them old times, when them English folks first came over here. Jamestown, they called it. And there’s this Indian girl, Pocahontas, she’s a big part of it. Now, I ain’t no expert, but I’ve heard some things in my time.

The New World Movie, Is It True?

This movie, it tries real hard to get things right. You see how they dressed, them houses they built, that’s probably close to how it was. They got some smart folks, you know, them scholar types, to help them out with that stuff. They say they read a whole bunch of books and all that jazz to make this movie.

  • Clothes and Houses: They say they got this part pretty right. Looked like what I seen in them old pictures.
  • That Indian Language: They even got them Indians speaking their own tongue. Can’t say I understood a word, but it sounded real.
  • Pocahontas and John Smith: Now this is where it gets tricky.

See, the movie, it makes it seem like Pocahontas and this John Smith fella, they were all lovey-dovey. Kissing and holding hands and all that. Now, I heard different. Some say they weren’t nothing more than friends. Maybe she helped him out, showed him the ropes, you know? But a big romance? Hmm, I don’t know about that.

Did They Really Love Each Other in The New World?

That’s what them history books can’t tell us for sure. It’s like trying to catch smoke, you just can’t get a good grip on it. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. This movie makes you think they did, but that’s just Hollywood for ya. They like to make things more exciting, you know, spice it up a bit. Make people feel some type of way when watching the movie.

And this Pocahontas girl in the movie, she’s played by a young’un, Q’orianka Kilcher, they call her. Fifteen years old, can you believe it? She did a good job, I reckon. But was the real Pocahontas like that? Hard to say. We only got them old stories, and you know how stories change over time. It is like a game of telephone, by the end of it, the story is completely different.

They say this director, Terrence Malick, he’s a stickler for details. He wanted everything to be just so. And you can see it, in the way the movie looks, you know, the scenery and all. It’s like stepping back in time, almost.

So, Is The New World Accurate?

Well, it’s like this: If you’re looking for a history lesson, this movie ain’t it. It’s more like a painting, you know? It’s got some truth in it, but it’s also got some… well, let’s just say the artist took some liberties. They had to make some stuff up to make the story flow, to make you want to keep watching.

It’s like them historical movies, some of them are real good. They show you what really happened, or as close as they can get. Like that “Schindler’s List” one, that was a tough one to watch, but it was important. Or that “Downfall,” about that Hitler fella. Scary stuff, but it happened.

This New World movie, it’s trying to do the same, I think. Show us a piece of the past. But it’s also trying to tell a story, a love story. And sometimes, them two things, they don’t mix so well. Like oil and water, you know?

So, is it accurate? Parts of it, yeah. The way things looked, the way they talked, maybe even some of the things that happened. But that love story? That’s the part you gotta take with a grain of salt. Like when your neighbor tells you their fishing story, you know they’re gonna stretch the truth a little.

All in all, it’s a pretty movie to watch. And it makes you think about them old times. But just remember, it’s a movie, not a history book. It’s like a good stew, it’s got a lot of good stuff in it, but you gotta be able to pick out the bones and not believe everything you are being told.
