Okay, so, today I tried out one of those crossword puzzles. You know, the ones with clues and boxes? And it had to do with Netflix’s co-founder, a guy named Hastings. The title of the puzzle was something like “Netflix Co-founder Hastings Crossword.” I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” Seemed like a decent way to kill some time and maybe learn something new.

First, I just dived in, you know, casually, without really thinking too much about it. Looked at the clues, some of them were like, “___ Hastings, American entrepreneur, something something Netflix.” Pretty straightforward, right? But some clues were trickier. They were more like riddles. That’s where I learned that there are different types of crossword puzzles, like cryptic ones. Who knew?

  • Started with the easy clues: I figured I’d start with the easy ones, the fill-in-the-blanks. Those were mostly about this Hastings guy and his connection to Netflix. Got a few of those filled in pretty quickly.
  • Got stuck: But then I hit a wall. Some clues, man, they were tough. I mean, they weren’t just asking for a simple answer. They were like little puzzles in themselves.
  • Tried a new tactic: So, I switched it up. I started looking at the intersecting words, you know, the ones that share letters with other words. That helped a bit. Like, if I knew one word, it gave me a hint for another. It’s like a little light bulb went off in my head!
  • Googled a bit: Alright, I admit it, I did a little bit of Googling. Just to see what this whole “crossword” thing was all about. Turns out, there’s a whole strategy to it. Like, the Monday puzzles are the easiest, and they get harder throughout the week. Sundays are apparently not the hardest, though.
  • Persevered: Even with the Googling, it wasn’t a walk in the park. But I kept at it. Tried to think of synonyms, related words, anything that could fit.

Eventually, after some serious brain work and maybe a few more peeks at Google I managed to solve it. The answer to that main clue, “___ Hastings, co-founder of Netflix”? It was “REED.” Felt pretty good, I gotta say. It’s like solving a mini-mystery or something.

Lessons learned

This whole crossword thing, it’s not just about knowing the answers. It’s about the process, the strategy, and that little “aha!” moment when it all clicks. And hey, I learned something about the guy who helped start Netflix. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, right? I might even try another one of these puzzles. Maybe I’ll even try a Tuesday one.
