Okay, so the other day I was just chilling, trying to find something good to watch on Netflix. I was in the mood for something kinda intense, you know, like ‘Thirteen.’ That movie really stuck with me, with all the raw teenage drama and stuff.
So, I started digging around, trying to find movies that give off the same vibe. I mean, ‘Thirteen’ is pretty unique, but there’s gotta be other films out there that explore similar themes, right? Like, teenage angst, rebellion, family issues, all that good stuff.
First, I searched on Netflix itself. I typed in ‘teen drama’ and ‘coming-of-age’ and scrolled through a bunch of titles. Some looked promising, but nothing really screamed ‘Thirteen’ to me. I added a few to my list to check out later, but I wasn’t fully convinced.
Then, I decided to hit up the internet. I googled stuff like “movies like thirteen” and “teen movies similar to thirteen.” That led me to some interesting articles and forum discussions. People were recommending all sorts of films, some I’d heard of, some I hadn’t.
I found this one site, Letterboxd, where users were making lists of movies similar to ‘Thirteen’. There were some interesting titles on there, like ‘Yung’ and ‘White Oleander’. They seemed kinda dark and edgy, just like ‘Thirteen’. So, I wrote those down to watch later.
I also stumbled upon some classics that people kept mentioning, like ‘Almost Famous’ and ‘Lady Bird’. ‘Almost Famous’ is about a young journalist following a band, which sounds kinda cool. And ‘Lady Bird’ is supposed to be a really good coming-of-age story. They didn’t seem exactly like ‘Thirteen’, but they were in the same ballpark, so I figured I’d give them a shot.
There’s also ‘Kids’, a really in-your-face movie, you know, kind of on the more extreme side, I guess you could say. I remember watching some clips a while ago, and well, let’s just say it’s not for everyone. But it does explore some of the same themes as ‘Thirteen’, so it went on my list too.
Here’s what I ended up with:
- Almost Famous – Directed by Cameron Crowe, it’s about a young journalist following a band.
- Lady Bird – A coming-of-age story about a high school student.
- Kids – Directed by Larry Clark, it’s a pretty controversial film about teenagers.
- Yung – Seemed interesting from that Letterboxd list.
- White Oleander – Another one from the Letterboxd list that looked promising.
