Luca Guadagnino’s Sweltering Drama ‘Queer’ Trailer #2 w/ Daniel Craig

“This difficulty is convince someone else he is really a part of you…” Ain’t that the truth. A24 has revealed a second official trailer for Queer, the second film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino out this year (he also opened Challengers in spring). Queer, adapted from the William S. Burroughs’ novel, first premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (here’s my review) with stops at the Toronto, Zurich, London, and New York Film Festivals as well. Set in the 1950s – Daniel Craig stars as drifter Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and G.I. Bill benefits. He is compelled to pursue a young man named Allerton, based on Adelbert Lewis Marker. Drew Starkey co-stars as his young infatuation, with a cast including Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Omar Apollo, & Colin Bates. The film also features another sublime score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. I like this trailer much more than the first one, it captures the lustful, sweltering vibe of the film much better. For anyone ready to watch, Queer opens in limited theaters starting later this week.

1950. William Lee (Craig), an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with the other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton (Starkey), an expat former soldier new to the city, shows him – for the first time – it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody. Queer is directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, director the films The Protagonists, Melissa P, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All, and Challengers previously, as well as a few docs including Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams most recently. The screenplay is by Justin Kuritzkes (also of Challengers). Adapted from William S. Burroughs’ novel of the same name published in 1985 (though originally written in 1952). Produced by Luca Guadagnino and Lorenzo Mieli. This initially premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival this fall (read our review). A24 will debut Guadagnino’s Queer film in select US theaters starting on November 27th, 2024 during Thanksgiving week – with more theaters during December. Want to watch?
