Well, let me tell ya something, all this talk ’bout horror movies, I reckon we all got a bit of somethin’ wild inside us. Stephen King, now, he wrote a piece called “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” and he ain’t wrong when he says we’re all a little bit mad. You might not think it, but every single one of us carries a bit of that darkness deep down inside. It ain’t somethin’ you can just hide away forever, and that’s where horror movies come in.

You see, King believes that we love to watch these scary flicks ’cause it lets us bring out the beast in us, without it actually hurtin’ anybody. It’s like, we all got these fears, these crazy thoughts and emotions, and when we watch those films, we get to act out all that madness safely. It’s like a pressure cooker—everything builds up inside, and then, pop! You let it all out, scream at the screen, and somehow, you feel better after. Ain’t that somethin’?

Now, he says that the reason we crave horror movies ain’t just ’cause we like being scared (though that sure does play a part). It’s ’cause watchin’ these movies gives us a chance to face our fears. You know, lookin’ at death and all them creepy things we normally don’t want to think about. By watchin’ it, we get to take control of somethin’ that usually feels too big for us to handle. I guess it’s like pokin’ the tiger with a stick—ya see it, ya feel it, but you ain’t really in any danger.

Also, there’s somethin’ about that rush of adrenaline. When them ghosts start hauntin’ or them monsters jump out at ya, your heart starts poundin’, doesn’t it? It’s like your body’s sayin’, “Run!” but you’re safe in your chair, so you just get all excited, like a kid on Christmas mornin’. That little jolt, that excitement—ain’t it kinda fun? I think that’s part of the draw. Your heart beats fast, and you feel alive. It’s that fight-or-flight reaction, ya know? Makes ya feel like you’re ready for anythin’—even though you ain’t really in danger.

And then, there’s that thing about the unknown. Humans, we’re always curious. We wonder what’s out there, what’s on the other side, what’s in the dark corners we can’t see. Horror movies tap into that curiosity, showin’ us things that we ain’t got answers for. Things that can’t be explained, things that go bump in the night. It’s like we got a hunger to know what’s behind the curtain, even if it scares the life outta us. Watchin’ that stuff lets us look into that abyss without havin’ to actually walk down the dark alley ourselves.

King also talks about how horror movies help us get a little bit of release. It’s like, every day, we got to act normal, like we ain’t got no wild thoughts or dark ideas floatin’ around in our heads. But deep down, them thoughts are there, and sometimes, they gotta come out. Horror movies let us face the ugly side of life—those things we’d rather not talk about, like death, pain, and madness. But when we watch it on the screen, it’s not real, and that makes it easier to deal with. It’s like a safe space for our insanity.

Now, I ain’t sayin’ we all need to sit down and watch a scary movie every night, but it does make sense, don’t it? When you’re sittin’ there in front of the screen, heart racin’, mind buzzin’, it’s like you’re confrontin’ your worst fears head-on, and somehow, that makes you feel stronger. You ain’t really scared anymore, ’cause you know it’s just a movie. It’s all make-believe. But at the same time, you get to feel what it’s like to be in the middle of somethin’ terrifying and come out the other side still breathin’. That’s a kinda strength, I reckon.

All in all, we love horror movies ‘cause they let us face the parts of ourselves we’re too scared to confront in real life. They let us live through the chaos and come out the other side, safe and sound. And that’s the beauty of it. Horror lets us take control of our fears, lets us poke the darkness with a stick, and maybe, just maybe, we get a little bit stronger each time we do it. Ain’t that right?
