Well, now, let me tell ya somethin’ about them movie jobs in New Mexico. Folks are always lookin’ for work, and I hear tell there’s quite a bit of it in the pictures out there. Yep, movies, they call ’em.
New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, and Movie Makin’
I ain’t never been to one of them movin’ picture shows myself, but my grandbaby, she tells me they’re somethin’ else. And wouldn’t ya know it, they make a whole bunch of ‘em right here in New Mexico. They say it’s ’cause the place looks so purdy, all them mountains and deserts and such. Good enough for the cowboys, I reckon, good enough for the movie folks too.
- Lots of Different Jobs, Not Just Actors
Now, you might think it’s all about them actors, the pretty folks dressin’ up and pretendin’. But there’s a whole heap of other jobs too. My neighbor’s boy, he got a job carryin’ stuff around for them movie people. Grips, they call ’em. He says he lifts heavy things all day, but the pay’s good, so he ain’t complainin’.
Then there’s the folks who set up the lights, the camera fellers, the ones who find the places to shoot the movies, and even the ones who make sure everythin’ looks just right. Art directors, they call some of ’em. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it’s just work, same as anythin’ else, I reckon.
And don’t forget about them folks who do the writin’. My niece she’s always scribblin’ in her notebook, says she wants to write one of them movie stories one day. Well, bless her heart, I say. Someone’s gotta come up with them tales.
Findin’ Them Jobs
Now, how you find these jobs, that’s the tricky part. I hear tell there’s these things called “websites” now. My grandbaby showed me one time. You type in what you’re lookin’ for and it spits out a whole bunch of stuff. Says there’s hundreds of film jobs in New Mexico on somethin’ called “Indeed.” Sounds like a lot to me.
They got jobs for everythin’, from teachers – yeah, they need teachers even on movie sets, to learn the young’uns their lines I guess – to folks who just help out, production assistants they call ’em. And if you know somethin’ about wires and such, you might could get a job as an electrical engineer. They need them too, I hear. Heck, they even got jobs for folks who just watch the movies, to make sure they’re good I suppose. They call it “Chief of Cheer,” imagine that.
Lots of Folks Workin’ in the Movies
The government folks, they say there’s about eight thousand people workin’ in the movies in New Mexico. That’s a whole lotta folks, if you ask me. Enough to fill up a whole town, I bet. And it ain’t just Hollywood folks comin’ here, they got local people workin’ too. That’s good for the economy, they say. Means more money for everyone, I reckon.
Even Dream Jobs!
Now, get this! Some of them jobs are real easy, like watchin’ movies. Can you believe it? You get paid to watch movies! They had one job where you watched holiday movies, twenty-five of ’em! And another one where you just went to the movie theater all summer. Sound like a good gig if you can get it. My old bones wouldn’t like sittin’ that long though.
Want to Be in Front of the Camera?
And if you fancy yourself a star, well, they’re always lookin’ for actors too. Even regular folks can get a chance. I saw a thing the other day, lookin’ for people to be in a new movie, regular people, not fancy actors. They call it “indie” movies I think. So, if you ever wanted to be on the big screen, here’s your chance maybe.
California’s Got Movies Too
Now, California, that’s where all the movies started, I hear. They still make a lot of ‘em there. And they give the movie folks breaks on their taxes, so they like to film there. But New Mexico, we got our own charm, and the movie folks, they seem to like it just fine here too.
So, if you’re lookin’ for work, and you don’t mind long hours and sometimes heavy liftin’, then maybe a movie job in New Mexico is just the ticket for you. Just gotta go out there and find it, I reckon. And maybe learn how to use them “websites” too.
