Well now, let me tell ya ’bout this here movie, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. I ain’t no fancy movie critic, mind you, but I know what I like, and I reckon this here movie was alright.
The story, see, it’s about this hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. A hobbit’s a small fella, likes his comfort and his food, kinda like me after a big Sunday dinner. But this Bilbo, he gets dragged off on an adventure, whether he likes it or not. These dwarves, a whole bunch of ’em, show up at his doorstep, talkin’ ’bout gold and dragons and whatnot.
- They want to go reclaim their home, this Lonely Mountain, from a big ol’ dragon named Smaug. Sounds like a heap of trouble to me, but these dwarves, they’re stubborn as mules.
- And Bilbo, well, he gets roped into goin’ along with ’em. He’s supposed to be the burglar, sneaky like, though he don’t look much like a burglar to me.
Now, the movie, it’s got a lot of purty scenery. Mountains and rivers and such. Reminds me a bit of the countryside back home, ‘cept with more pointy-eared fellas and scary creatures. There’s these trolls, big and ugly, and goblins, even uglier. And orcs, nasty things they are. Always causin’ trouble. Bilbo and the dwarves, they gotta fight their way through all sorts of dangers. Makes ya wonder why they just didn’t stay home and have a nice cup of tea.
Some folks say this here movie ain’t as good as them “Lord of the Rings” movies. I ain’t seen them, so I can’t say for sure. But this “Hobbit” movie, it’s got its moments. There’s some funny parts, made me chuckle a bit. And there’s some excitin’ parts, had me holdin’ my breath. Though, I gotta say, sometimes it felt a bit long. Like when you’re listenin’ to the preacher go on and on, and you just want him to get to the point.
One thing that bothered me a bit was all them fancy computer effects. Sometimes it looked real, like them mountains and such, but other times, it just looked fake. Like them goblins, they didn’t look real scary, just kinda… cartoony. Back in my day, if you wanted a scary monster, you had to make it yourself, outta paper mache or somethin’. That was real work, that was.
But overall, I’d say “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is a decent movie. It’s a good story, even if it takes a while to tell it. And it’s got some likeable characters, even that grumpy ol’ dwarf, Thorin. If you like adventures and fantasy and such, you’ll probably enjoy it. Just don’t expect it to be the best thing you ever seen. It’s like a good apple pie, nothin’ fancy, but it fills ya up and makes ya feel good inside.
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go put the kettle on. All this talkin’s made me thirsty.
Oh, and one more thing, they say this book it’s from is real popular. Lots of folks read it when they were young’uns. Guess it’s a good story, if it’s lasted this long.
And if you are gonna watch all them movies, the “Hobbit” ones and the “Lord of the Rings” ones, start with this here “Hobbit” movie first. That way, you’ll understand the story better. It’s like eatin’ your vegetables before you get to dessert.
