Alright, let’s talk about them short movies, you know, the little picture shows. I ain’t no fancy movie critic or nothin’, just a regular person tellin’ it like it is. I seen a few, and I got some things to say, so listen up.
First off, what’s the big deal with these “Oscar-nominated” shorts? They say they’re the best, but sometimes I just don’t get it. Like, this one time, I watched one about a lost brother, and it was just sad, sad, sad. Made me wanna cry, and not in a good way. Then there was this other one, somethin’ about a hundred… somethings? Honestly, I kinda dozed off. Too much thinkin’, not enough showin’, if you know what I mean.
The thing with these short movies is, they gotta grab you quick. Ain’t nobody got time for a slow burn when you only got a few minutes. They gotta have a good story, some characters you can care about, and somethin’ that makes you go “huh” or “wow” or maybe even “aww.” And it better be clear, too. I hate it when I finish a movie and I’m like, “what the heck just happened?” That ain’t entertainment, that’s just confusin’.
Now, some folks, they like the scary ones, the horror flicks. Me? Not so much. I don’t need no jump scares or creepy crawlies to give me a good time. But I watched one short horror film, just to see what the fuss was about. It was about a girl, all alone in a house, and you just knew somethin’ bad was gonna happen. And it did! But it wasn’t the monsters or the blood that got to me, it was the way the girl looked so scared. Made me feel for her, you know? That’s good acting, I guess.
Then there’s the funny ones, the comedies. Now those, I can get behind. A good laugh is worth a whole lot, especially when you’re feelin’ down. I saw a short comedy about a dog, a real goofy-lookin’ dog, that just caused all sorts of trouble. It was silly, but it was fun. Made me chuckle, and that’s all I ask for sometimes.
- Good story is important
- Characters need to be likable or at least interesting
- It has to be easy to understand
But here’s the thing, even if a short movie is funny or scary or whatever, it still gotta be good, you know? The pictures gotta look nice, the people gotta act right, and the whole thing gotta flow together. It can’t just be a bunch of random scenes thrown together. There’s gotta be a point, a message, somethin’ that sticks with you after it’s over.
So how do you know if a short movie is any good? Well, you can read reviews, I guess. But them fancy reviewers, they use big words and talk about stuff I don’t even understand. “Cinematography” this and “pacing” that. What does it all mean? I just wanna know if it’s worth my time, that’s all.
I reckon the best way is to just watch it yourself. See if it grabs you, see if it makes you feel somethin’. And if it doesn’t, well, then just move on to the next one. There’s plenty of short movies out there, somethin’ for everyone, I reckon.
And don’t forget to tell other folks what you think! That’s how you help other people find the good ones, and avoid the stinkers. You don’t need no fancy words, just tell it like it is. Was it funny? Was it scary? Did it make you think? Did it waste your time? That’s all anybody needs to know.
So that’s my two cents on short movies. They ain’t all winners, but when you find a good one, it’s like a little treat. A little story, a little escape, a little somethin’ to make you feel alive. And that’s a good thing, ain’t it?
