Well, I saw this movie, “Maestro”, they call it. Don’t ask me why, someone just dragged me along, you know? Anyways, it’s about this fella, Leonard Bernstein, a big shot musician, I guess. Famous conductor, they say.

Now, the movie, it looked real pretty. Fancy clothes, fancy houses, all that jazz. Like one of them magazines my granddaughter reads. The colors were nice, I’ll give ’em that. But honestly, for a long time, it felt like just watching folks pose. Like they were more worried about lookin’ good than tellin’ a story.

  • Lots of smokin’, I tell ya. Cigarettes everywhere. Felt like I was chokin’ just watchin’ it.
  • And the talkin’, sometimes it went on and on, didn’t make much sense to me. Fancy words, you know? Like they were tryin’ too hard.

But then, towards the end, it got a bit better. Started showin’ the music more, the passion this fella had. Bradley Cooper, the actor, he did a good job, I reckon. You could see he was really into it, waving his arms around like he was chasin’ chickens or somethin’. And that Carey Mulligan, she was good too. Real strong woman, you could tell.

They say this Bernstein fella was a real genius, wrote all sorts of music. But the movie, it didn’t really show you that much of it, not until the end, like I said. It was more about his life, his troubles, his lovin’ and all that. Seems like he had a complicated life, that’s for sure. Men and women, both, you know? Not that it’s any of my business.

The sound, though, that was somethin’ else. The music, when they finally played it, it was loud and powerful. Made you wanna tap your feet, even if you didn’t know what the heck they were singin’ about. And the pictures, they were clear and sharp. You could see every wrinkle on their faces, every little detail.

So, overall, what did I think? Well, it was pretty, like I said. The actors did a fine job, especially when they were makin’ music. But it took a long time to get goin’, too much fussin’ around with the fancy stuff. And I still don’t know much more about this Bernstein fella than I did before. Except that he liked to smoke and had a lot of drama in his life.

I guess some folks would call it a good movie, maybe even a great one. But for me, it was just alright. Not bad, but not great either. Just a bunch of fancy folks with their fancy problems. Give me a good old Western any day, at least you know what’s goin’ on in them.

But hey, what do I know? I’m just an old woman. Maybe you young folks will like it more than I did. Go see it if you want, just don’t expect a simple story. It’s one of them artsy-fartsy things, you know?

One thing’s for sure though, they spent a lot of money makin’ it. You could see it in the clothes, the houses, everything. Maybe that’s why they call it “Maestro”. Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Like somethin’ important.

Anyways, that’s my two cents. Take it or leave it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about fancy movies is makin’ me hungry for some good old-fashioned meatloaf.
