NBC has a treat for One Chicago fans in the first month of the new year. Deadline reports that the crossover event teased a few weeks ago is happening, and the network has set the air date. Chicago Med , Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. will air the first crossover in 5 years on Wednesday, January 29, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. The official logline below teases a massive undertaking that requires all hands on deck when an explosion rocks a high-rise in Chicago. It is unclear which order the episodes will air, but if the shows follow the regular sequence, the event should begin with Med and end with P.D.

“When a gas explosion rocks a high-rise, Chicago’s first responders come out in force to rescue hundreds of civilians. The calamity beneath the surface, however, sends our heroes on a race to save 40 people trapped deep underground, including two of their own.”

Various factors have affected the ability of the shows to do a proper crossover in the past five years, beginning with the pandemic. Right around when pandemic restrictions were lifted, Hollywood guilds went on strike, and by the time it was resolved, the season had progressed. That left no room for crossovers across many franchises, not just One Chicago. Crossovers are significant, corralling teams from different shows to tell a coherent story. Anastasia Puglisi, Wolf Entertainment Executive Vice President and co-executive producer of One Chicago, highlighted how huge this undertaking was and thanked the teams, saying,

“Putting together what is essentially a three-hour action movie is an incredibly ambitious task requiring complete coordination across our writers, casts, crews, and producers, along with help from the city of Chicago. We’re thrilled to have the best talent in every department to meet this challenge, reinforce the #OneChicago brand, and provide our fans with a unique and compelling viewing experience.”

This crossover brings together the vast One Chicago team consisting of Chicago Med stars S. Epatha Merkerson (Sharon Goodwin), Oliver Platt (Daniel Charles), Steven Weber (Dean Archer), Marlyne Barrett (Maggie Lockwood), Jessy Schram (Hannah Asher), Luke Mitchell (Mitch Ripley), Sarah Ramos (Caitlin Ramos) and Darren Barnet (John Frost); Chicago Fire stars Taylor Kinney (Kelly Severide), Dermot Mulroney (Dom Pascal), David Eigenberg (Christopher Herrmann), Miranda Rae Mayo (Stella Kidd), Joe Miñoso (Joe Cruz), Christian Stolte (Randy McHolland), Daniel Kyri (Darren Ritter), Hanako Greensmith (Violet Mikami), Jake Lockett (Sam Carver) and Jocelyn Hudon (Lizzie Novak); Chicago P.D. stars Jason Beghe (Hank Voight), Patrick John Flueger (Adam Ruzek), Marina Squerciati (Kim Burgess), LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin Awater), Amy Morton (Trudy Platt), Benjamin Levy Aguilar (Dante Torres) and Toya Turner (Kiana Cook).

The creative team consists Dick Wolf as an executive producer on all three shows, Chicago Med executive producers Allen MacDonald, Stephen Hootstein and Peter Jankowski with MacDonald as the showrunner, Chicago Fire executive producers Andrea Newman, Reza Tabrizi, Matt Whitney and Peter Jankowski with Newman as the showrunner, and Chicago P.D. executive producers Gwen Sigan, Rick Eid, Chad Saxton, Gavin Harris, Beghe and Jankowski, with Sigan as the showrunner.

The shows are on hiatus and will return on Wednesday, January 8, three weeks before the crossover event. Catch up with all of them on Peacock.
