Alright, alright, lemme tell ya ’bout this “Movie” thing, the one by that rapper, Your Old Droog. Don’t ask me who he is, some young fella makin’ noise, I guess. My grandson, he listens to this stuff, says it’s the real deal. So, I sat down, figured I’d give it a whirl, see what the fuss is all about.
Now, this “Movie,” it ain’t no Gone with the Wind, that’s for sure. It’s more like… well, it’s like listenin’ to someone tell you their life story, but they doin’ it with rhymes. This Droog fella, he’s talkin’ ’bout growin’ up, findin’ himself, you know? Like, who am I? Where do I belong? Stuff like that.
- He’s Ukrainian-American, this Droog kid.
- Comes from somewhere over there, talks about it a bit.
- But mostly, it’s about him in New York City. Big city, lots of people, gotta figure out your place.
He calls himself the “Rap Game’s John Cusack.” Don’t know who that John Cusack is, probably some actor my grandson likes. But this Droog, he’s definitely tellin’ a story, a personal one. You can hear it in his voice, you know? He ain’t just makin’ up rhymes for the sake of it. He’s pourin’ his heart out, talkin’ ’bout his struggles, his wins, his losses.
This ain’t his first rodeo, neither. They say it’s his ninth album. Ninth! That’s a lot of talkin’, if you ask me. Guess he’s got a lot to say. Started out with a bang, they say, with his first album, the one named after himself. Now he’s back after two years, with this “Movie.”
And the music? Well, it’s… it’s got beats, you know? Some fast, some slow. Some make you wanna tap your feet, some make you wanna sit and think. It ain’t like the music I used to listen to, the good ol’ country stuff, but it ain’t bad. It’s got a rhythm, a pulse. You can feel it, you know? It’s got that… what do they call it? Flow? Yeah, that’s it. He’s got flow.
The whole thing, it feels like a journey. You start out with this young fella, tryna figure things out, and you end up… well, I ain’t gonna spoil it for ya. But he grows, he learns, he changes. He gets shaped by the world around him, whether he likes it or not. That’s what he’s tellin’ ya. Life ain’t easy, but you gotta keep goin’, keep findin’ your way.
Is it a great movie, like those old black and white ones I used to watch? Nah, not really. But it’s somethin’. It’s real. It’s honest. It’s one fella’s story, told in his own way. And that’s worth somethin’, ain’t it?
So, if you like that rappin’ stuff, give it a listen. If you don’t, well, maybe give it a listen anyway. Might surprise ya. Might make ya think. Might even make ya tap your feet a little. Just don’t expect no explosions or car chases. This ain’t that kind of movie. This is a movie about a life, a real life, with all its ups and downs. And sometimes, that’s the best kind of movie there is.
Like I said, my grandson likes this Droog fella. Says he’s the real deal. And you know what? After listenin’ to this “Movie,” I think maybe he’s right. Maybe this Droog kid, he’s got somethin’ to say. Somethin’ worth listenin’ to.
