Well, let me tell ya ’bout this thing, this… “My Netflixer,” they call it. I ain’t no fancy city gal, so bear with me, alright? My grandkid, that little whippersnapper, showed it to me. Said it’s got all them “shows” and “movies.” Don’t know what half them words mean, but I reckon it’s like them picture shows they used to have down at the town square, only now they’re in this here box, this “Netflixer.”
First thing I saw was this show, somethin’ about “Love of My Life.” Sixty episodes! Can you believe that? Sixty! That’s more stories than old man Jenkins down the road has, and believe me, that fella’s seen a thing or two. This “Love of My Life” thing, it’s all about folks fallin’ in and out of love, just like real life, I guess. Only, these folks are prettier and their clothes ain’t got no patches on ’em. They cry a lot, though. Seems like everyone’s cryin’ or yellin’. Reminds me of that time the Johnson’s prize pig got loose. Now that was a drama!
Then there’s this other show, the one with the girl named “Wednesday.” My grandkid, she’s obsessed! Keeps tellin’ me, “Granny, you gotta watch it! It’s spooky and cool!” Spooky? I’ve seen spooky. I’ve seen a chicken with its head cut off runnin’ around the yard. That’s spooky. But I watched it anyways, this “Wednesday” thing. It’s about this girl who goes to a school for, well, peculiar kids, I guess. They got powers and stuff. One kid can control bees. Bees! Reminds me of that time we had that beehive in the old oak tree. Took us a whole week to get rid of it. And the honey, oh, that honey was sweet.
- This “Wednesday” girl, she don’t smile much. Just glares at folks. Like my cat, Mittens, when she’s plannin’ on pouncin’ on a mouse.
- And she’s got this weird hand thing that walks around on its own. Scared the bejeezus outta me the first time I saw it.
- They also got these monsters and mysteries and whatnot. It’s kinda fun, I guess. Keeps you guessin’. Like tryin’ to figure out why the rooster stopped crowin’ last summer. (Turned out he just had a sore throat, silly bird.)
But here’s the thing about this “My Netflixer,” it ain’t free, you see. Well, some of it is, some ain’t. My grandkid, she’s always talkin’ ’bout this other place, this “MyFlixer” thing. Says it’s free. Free movies! Free shows! Sounds like a dream, don’t it? She says it’s got all kinds of stuff, like them action movies with all the shootin’ and fightin’. And those funny ones, the “comedies,” they call ’em. And them historical ones about kings and queens and wars and such. And them scary ones, the “thrillers.” She says it’s like havin’ a whole picture show right there in your house, whenever you want it.
Now, I ain’t too tech-savvy. This here box with the pictures, it’s about as fancy as I get. But even I can see that this “My Netflixer” and this “MyFlixer,” they’re changin’ things. Folks ain’t gatherin’ ’round the radio no more, tellin’ stories. They’re sittin’ in their houses, starin’ at these boxes. Is it good? Is it bad? I don’t rightly know. But I reckon it’s here to stay. Just like them newfangled cars and them telephones that fit in your pocket. Times are changin’, that’s for sure.
And you know what? Sometimes, when I’m watchin’ them shows, I see a little bit of myself in them. The folks fallin’ in love, the folks fightin’, the folks laughin’, the folks cryin’. It’s all just life, ain’t it? Only, it’s on a screen now. And sometimes, that ain’t so bad. Sometimes, it’s nice to sit back and watch someone else’s stories for a while. Takes your mind off things, you know? Like that time I watched that movie about a dog who went on an adventure. Made me miss my old Bess, she was a good dog.
So yeah, this “My Netflixer” and “MyFlixer,” they’re somethin’ else. Don’t understand half of it, but I reckon I’m gettin’ the hang of it. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll even figure out how to work that there remote control without pressin’ all the wrong buttons. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear my grandkid callin’. Says there’s a new show about a family of bakers. And you know how much I love a good pie.
