Oh, you wanna watch somethin’ on Netflix ’bout that Appalachian Trail, huh? Well, I reckon there’s a few good movies and documentaries that’ll get your feet a-walking—without you ever leavin’ the couch. Now, listen here, the Appalachian Trail, or AT as the folks call it, is a long stretch of land, ’bout 2,185 miles, that goes through them fancy mountains, from Georgia all the way up to Maine. You know, there’s a lotta folks out there who’ve hiked it, some for fun, some for challenges, and some for reasons they won’t tell ya. And lucky for you, there’s some movies on Netflix where you can see all them adventures and struggles folks go through, just like if you was out there yourself, walkin’ that tough trail. So, grab a comfy chair and let’s take a look at a few of ‘em.

Wild – Now this one’s a big hit. It’s got Reese Witherspoon playin’ a lady named Cheryl Strayed, who hikes the whole dang Pacific Crest Trail, not the AT, but it’s close enough for ya to get the feel of what it’s like out there in them woods. She goes through all sorts of hardships, finds herself, and learns some big lessons along the way. If you like movies about people gettin’ through hard times and findin’ strength they didn’t know they had, this one’s right up your alley.

A Walk in the Woods – This here’s another one with a bit of an Appalachian connection, though it’s not strictly the AT either. But, still, it’s got that hikin’ spirit. Robert Redford and Nick Nolte play two old buddies who decide to hike the Appalachian Trail together, despite bein’ old and outta shape. They get into all kinds of trouble—fallin’ down, arguin’, gettin’ lost—and all the while they share some funny and touching moments. It ain’t a whole lotta serious business, but it’ll make you chuckle, and it shows how tough the trail can be, even if you’re a seasoned hiker.

Barbarian Utopia: Encounters on the Appalachian Trail – Now here’s somethin’ a bit different. This one’s a documentary from 2019, and it’s all about folks who set out to hike the Appalachian Trail and the struggles they face. There’s a young feller, just graduated from college, who decides to hike the whole thing and film his journey. He’s not alone though—there’s more than 100 other hikers, each with their own stories to tell. Some of ‘em you’ll laugh at, others might make you shed a tear. But it sure does show you the real deal when it comes to the AT.

Happiness for Beginners – This here’s a movie where a lady, after gettin’ a divorce, decides she’s gonna do somethin’ new. She don’t want no more of the same ol’ routine, so she signs up for a group hike. The folks in the group ain’t exactly what she expected, but she learns somethin’ new ’bout life, love, and herself. Ain’t the hardest of hikes, but it sure brings some heartfelt moments, and if you like stories where folks find their way back to happiness, this one’s for you.

The Foundation – Now, I gotta tell ya, if you’re in the mood for a little bit of horror mixed in with your hiking stories, then this one might be somethin’ to look at. It’s about a group of folks who find themselves on the Appalachian Trail, and they come across a strange group of people called “The Foundation.” Now, this ain’t a real group, but the way they’re portrayed—well, it’ll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. If you like your hikes to have a little danger and mystery, give this one a try.

Now, there’s plenty more hiking documentaries and movies out there that’ll take you on a journey through them wild woods. But these here are some of the ones you’ll find on Netflix that’ll get ya in the spirit of the Appalachian Trail. If you’ve ever thought about hittin’ the trail yourself, these movies might just give you the nudge you need—or they might make you realize that maybe, just maybe, it’s better to watch from the comfort of your own home. Either way, you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to be out there among the trees and hills.

So, there you go, if you’re lookin’ for some good hikin’ movies on Netflix, you sure got some good choices. Get your popcorn, put your feet up, and let these films take you to the Appalachian Trail. You might even end up wishin’ you was out there walkin’ with them folks, or you might be glad you’re sittin’ at home where it’s warm. Either way, you’ll have a good time.
