Alright, so I watched this movie, called “Bethlehem,” you know? Don’t ask me why, just did. It’s one of them foreign movies, kinda hard to follow at first, but I stuck with it, like a tick on a dog.
What’s it all about? Well, it’s about these two fellas, one’s Israeli, the other’s Palestinian. They’re tangled up together like a ball of yarn the cat got at. The Israeli fella, he’s some kind of agent, secret agent man, I reckon. And the Palestinian, he’s, well, he’s like his helper, or snitch, whatever you wanna call it. They call him an “asset” in the movie, all fancy-like, but it just means he tells the Israeli secrets, you see.
This ain’t no happy-go-lucky movie, mind you. It’s tough, real tough. Like chewin’ on a tough piece of jerky. They fightin’ and arguin’ and trustin’ each other one minute, then stabbin’ each other in the back the next. It’s like that Cain and Abel story from the Bible, only with bombs and guns instead of rocks and sticks. Keeps you on the edge of your seat, though, I’ll give it that.
- They talk a lot, these fellas. About important stuff, I guess. About their countries and their people and all that. Sometimes I couldn’t understand half of it, all them big words and political talk. But I got the gist of it, you know? They’re stuck in a bad situation, and nobody’s happy.
- And there’s this tension, thick as molasses in January. You just know somethin’ bad’s gonna happen, you just don’t know when or to who. It’s like waitin’ for the other shoe to drop, only the shoe’s made of dynamite. Keeps you guessin’, that’s for sure.
- The actors, they’re pretty good, I gotta say. Even though I don’t know them from Adam. They make you feel like you’re right there with them, in the middle of all that mess. You feel the anger, the fear, the sadness… all them feelings they’re havin’. They do a good job of makin’ it real.
Now, some folks say it’s a thriller, like one of them crime movies. And yeah, I guess it is, kinda. There’s chases and secrets and all that. But it’s more than just that. It’s about people, you know? About how they treat each other, how they hurt each other, even when they don’t mean to. It’s about war and peace and all them big ideas, but it’s also about the little things, like a father and son, or friends betrayin’ friends.
It ain’t no Disney movie, that’s for sure. No singin’ and dancin’. It’s serious, makes you think. Some folks like that, some folks don’t. Me? I’m on the fence. It was good, kept me entertained, but it also made me feel kinda heavy, you know? Like I just carried a sack of potatoes up a hill.
Would I recommend it? Well, that depends. If you like them action movies with lots of explosions and happy endings, this ain’t for you. But if you want somethin’ different, somethin’ that makes you think, then yeah, give it a try. Just don’t expect to come out of it feelin’ all warm and fuzzy. It’s a tough movie, about a tough subject, made by folks who seem to know what they’re talkin’ about, even if I didn’t always understand every word they said.
They say it was up for some fancy awards, too. An Oscar or somethin’. I can see why. It’s well-made, that’s for sure. The folks who made it, they knew what they were doin’. They put a lot of effort into it, you can tell. It ain’t perfect, mind you, no movie is. But it’s good enough. Good enough to make an old woman like me sit through the whole thing, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
In the end, it’s a story about people caught in a bad situation. They’re tryin’ to do what they think is right, but it ain’t always easy. And sometimes, doin’ what you think is right just makes things worse. That’s the kinda story this is. A sad story, but a real one, I reckon. At least, it feels real, even if it’s just a movie. So that’s my take on it, take it or leave it, it don’t matter none to me.
