So, I’ve been meaning to check out some new horror movies, and I remembered Redbox is still a thing. I mean, who even uses those kiosks anymore, right? But I figured, why not give it a shot? I was curious what kind of scary movies they have these days.
First, I drove to my nearest Redbox. It’s been a while, so I kinda forgot where it was exactly. After driving around for a bit, I finally found it tucked away in the corner of a grocery store parking lot. It felt like a blast from the past, seeing that red box standing there.
I walked up to the kiosk and started browsing through the horror section. I saw a few titles I recognized, like “The Eyes of My Mother” and even an older one, “George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead.” There were also a bunch of movies I’d never heard of before. They have about 600 movies, quite a lot, enough for me to choose from.
I ended up picking a couple that looked interesting. The whole process was pretty easy, just swipe your card, select your movies, and you’re good to go.
- Selected a couple of horror movies that caught my eye.
- Paid for the rentals using my credit card.
- Took the DVDs and headed back home.
I remembered they also have a streaming service. I never used it before. I did try to find some information about it. It seems like they launched it back in 2017, but now people are saying it’s probably shutting down. I tried the Redbox app on my Roku, but I just got an error message. It was telling me to check out other streaming services, so that was a bummer.
The Result
Anyway, I got home, popped one of the DVDs into my player, and settled in for a night of scares. It was a fun little experiment, and it was cool to revisit Redbox after all these years. It seems like the streaming service is a bust though. The movies were decent, nothing too groundbreaking, but it was still a good time. It’s kind of nostalgic to rent movies from a physical kiosk, even if it’s not as convenient as streaming. They even offered video games until 2019, I should have tried it once.
Overall, it was a fun trip down memory lane. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to rent some horror flicks, Redbox is still an option, as long as you don’t mind going to a kiosk.
