Alright, let’s talk about this movie, The Star. You know, the one about Jesus bein’ born? Yeah, that one. I watched it with the grandkids the other day, and well, it was somethin’ alright.
First off, it’s a cartoon. A cartoon about Jesus. Now, I ain’t got nothin’ against cartoons, mind you. Used to watch ‘em with my own kids way back when. But this one, it’s… different. It’s got animals talkin’ and all sorts of stuff. A donkey, I think his name was Bo, he’s like the main character, kinda. Followin’ the star and all that.
Now, the story, it’s the Jesus story, you know? Mary and Joseph, gotta go to Bethlehem, baby Jesus gotta be born. But like I said, it’s from the animals’ point of view. Which, I guess, is kinda cute. The kids liked it. They were laughin’ at the donkey and his pigeon friend, Dave. Dave, can you believe it? A pigeon named Dave in a movie about Jesus bein’ born. Well, I never.
- It’s about Jesus’ birth.
- Animals talk, like a donkey named Bo.
- It’s a cartoon, good for kids.
The movie, it’s what they call “family-friendly.” Means the little ones can watch it without you havin’ to cover their eyes or ears every five minutes. There’s no bad words, no fightin’ or nothin’ like that. Just a bunch of animals tryin’ to get to Bethlehem. And they sing some songs too. Catchy tunes, I gotta admit. Found myself hummin’ ‘em later while I was washin’ dishes.
Some folks, they say it’s a good way to teach the kids about the Bible. About the Christmas story. And I guess it is, in a way. It ain’t exactly like the Bible, though. Takes some liberties, you know? Like I said, the animals talkin’ and all that. But the main idea is there. Jesus bein’ born in a stable, the angels singin’, the wise men comin’ to visit. All that good stuff.
I heard some people callin’ it “deeply reverential.” Now, I ain’t so sure about that. It’s cute, it’s funny, it’s got a good message, I guess. But “deeply reverential”? That’s a big word for a cartoon donkey, ain’t it? But hey, who am I to judge? The kids enjoyed it, and that’s what matters, right?
They say it’s for older kids who can understand it’s just a made-up story about Jesus bein’ born. I guess that’s true. My youngest grandkid, little Timmy, he kept askin’ me if the donkey was gonna talk to him if we went to the farm. Had to explain to him that real donkeys don’t talk, not like Bo in the movie. Kids, they believe what they see, you know?
It ain’t a movie for adults, not really. Unless you got a soft spot for talkin’ animals and cartoon versions of Bible stories. But for families with young’uns, it’s a good pick. Keeps ‘em entertained for a while, and maybe, just maybe, they learn a little somethin’ about Jesus along the way. And ain’t that a good thing?
Overall, I’d say The Star is a harmless little movie. It ain’t gonna win no Oscars or nothin’, but it’s sweet and it’s got a good heart. A kid-friendly tellin’ of the birth of Jesus. And sometimes, that’s all you need.
So if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to watch with the grandkids on a Sunday afternoon, The Star ain’t a bad choice. Just don’t expect it to be a serious, grown-up movie about the Bible. It’s a cartoon, remember? With a talkin’ donkey and a pigeon named Dave. And that, well, that’s somethin’ else entirely.
Now, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about movies and donkeys has made me hungry.
