So, I really wanted to get into this Chapman Summer Film Academy thing. I mean, everyone says Chapman is one of the best film schools in the US, right? It’s like, up there with USC, but some people say it’s even better ’cause it’s a smaller campus, and you get more one-on-one time with the professors.
First, I started digging around to figure out how to apply. Turns out, the applications for the Dodge College Summer Film Academy were right there on their website. It seemed like a great chance for a high school student like me to learn the ropes.
I found out that Dodge College does this Summer Film Academy thing every year, two sessions, each one is two weeks long. It’s supposed to be super hands-on and you work with other people, which sounded pretty cool. This program is for pre-college, so just right for me.
Then, I started thinking about the cost. Someone said Chapman is pretty expensive, but they do give out scholarships. And you’re paying for some really nice facilities and chances to work with some great teachers. I figured if I really wanted to make it worth it, I’d have to jump on all the opportunities they offer.
- Checked out the application process online.
- Read up on what the Summer Film Academy is all about.
- Thought about the costs and how to maybe get a scholarship.
I heard that Chapman was ranked number 4 on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of top 25 American film schools in 2022, and it’s recognized as one of the top ten film schools in the world, which is pretty impressive. It’s a tough program, but also a great opportunity.
I decided to go for it and sent in my application. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but I thought, “What’s the worst that could happen?” If I get in, awesome. It seemed like a perfect fit for me.

The student-faculty ratio is 7.1:1, which is pretty good odds for getting some quality time with the instructors. And there are other summer programs available in Irvine, across different subjects, not just film, in case I wanted to explore other things.
In the end, I got accepted! It was a pretty amazing feeling. I’m really excited to see what I can learn and who I’ll meet. I guess all that worrying and hard work paid off. It’s going to be a busy summer, but I have a feeling it’ll be worth every minute.

This whole experience has been a real eye-opener. It’s shown me that if you really want something, you’ve got to go for it. Do your research, put in the work, and just see what happens. You might surprise yourself. I did!
