Alright, so you wanna know about them “best giallo films,” huh? I ain’t no fancy movie expert, mind you, but I’ve seen my share of them bloody, mysterious pictures. They call ’em “giallo,” like that fancy yellow color, but lemme tell ya, there’s more red than yellow in most of ’em!
What’s a Giallo Anyway?
Now, from what I gather, these giallo films are mostly Italian thrillers. Lots of murder, lots of suspense, and plenty of stuff that’ll make your stomach churn. They say some fella named Mario Bava started it all with a movie called “The Girl Who Knew Too Much.” Never seen it myself, but folks say it’s the granddaddy of ’em all.
Deep Red: A Real Christmas Treat (Not Really)
One that sticks out in my mind is “Deep Red.” Starring some fella named David Hemmings and a gal named Daria Nicolodi. They say it’s one of the best, and I reckon they might be right. It’s a Christmas horror movie, but don’t go thinkin’ it’s all sugar plums and reindeer. It’s got more stabbings than Santa’s got elves, that’s for sure. Plenty of twists and turns too, kept me guessin’ till the very end.
- Lots of blood, I mean, a real mess.
- Somebody’s always gettin’ chased or stalked.
- Music that makes your skin crawl.
- Gloves! Black leather gloves everywhere. You just know someone’s gonna get it when you see those gloves.
They say these giallo movies are like that Hitchcock fella’s stuff, all suspenseful and whatnot, but with way more… well, you know… guts. And they ain’t wrong. These Italian fellas, they sure know how to make a bloody mess on screen.
More Than Just Gore, Though…
Now, don’t get me wrong, it ain’t all just blood and guts. There’s a mystery to solve in these pictures, too. You gotta pay attention, or you’ll get lost quicker than a chicken in a fox den. Trying to figure out who the killer is half the fun, even if you gotta cover your eyes every now and then.
Suspiria: Witches and Whatnot
Then there’s this one called “Suspiria.” Heard folks talkin’ about it, saying it’s a classic. About witches and a spooky dance school. I ain’t seen the whole thing, but from what I hear, it’s got plenty of that red stuff too. And it’s real pretty to look at, even when folks are gettin’ chopped up. Goes to show, even somethin’ nasty can look nice if you do it right, I guess.
Finding Them Giallo Films
Now, where to find these giallo pictures? That’s the tricky part. They ain’t always playin’ at the local picture show, that’s for sure. You gotta do some diggin’. Maybe try them fancy streaming services, or see if the library has any. Or, you know, ask around. Somebody’s bound to know where to find some good, bloody Italian thrillers.
So, Why Watch ‘Em?
So why watch these giallo films anyways? I guess it’s like eatin’ spicy food. Some folks can’t stand it, but others, well, they just crave that burn. These movies, they ain’t for the faint of heart. But if you like a good mystery, a good scare, and don’t mind a bit of the red stuff, then you might just find yourself enjoyin’ these strange, twisted little pictures. Just don’t say I didn’t warn ya, they can get pretty darn gruesome. But hey, sometimes a little bit of gruesome is just what the doctor ordered, right? Or maybe not. I ain’t no doctor neither.
Word of Warning
Just a little heads-up though, these ain’t movies you wanna watch with the young’uns around. Lots of stuff in there that’d give ’em nightmares for weeks. Wait till they’re older, or maybe just don’t show ’em at all. Some things are better left unseen, if you catch my drift.
Anyways, that’s my two cents on them giallo films. Take it or leave it. Just remember, if you go lookin’ for ’em, be prepared for a wild ride. And maybe keep a bucket handy, just in case.
