Okay, here is my sharing about making a horror movie costume for a woman.

So, I really wanted to get into the Halloween spirit this year, and I thought, why not try to make a horror movie costume? I mean, I watch enough of them, right? I started brainstorming some ideas and looking around online for inspiration. There are so many awesome female characters in horror movies, it was tough to choose just one!

I looked at a bunch of pictures and tried to figure out what I could realistically make myself. I’m not exactly a pro with a sewing machine, you know? I thought about doing something with a nun outfit since those are always creepy, but then I remembered Regan from The Exorcist. That movie used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid! And the best part? It seemed pretty easy to put together. I mean she’s just a kid in a nightgown, right? How hard can it be?

First, I went to a thrift store and found this old, kinda gross-looking nightgown. It was perfect! It already had some stains on it, which added to the whole possessed vibe. Then I got some white face paint and some green, nasty-looking makeup for the, uh, you know… vomit. I also picked up some dark eyeshadow to make myself look all tired and sickly. Oh, and I grabbed a cheap brown wig because my hair is way too light for this.

Getting ready was a whole process. I put on the wig first, and let me tell you, it was itchy! Then I slathered on the white face paint, making sure to leave some streaks to make it look like cracked porcelain or something. Next, I carefully applied the green makeup around my mouth and down the front of the nightgown. It was pretty messy, but I think it turned out okay. I added the dark circles under my eyes, and I gotta say, I looked pretty messed up!

The finishing touch was the contacts. I found some creepy, white-out contacts online, and those things really completed the look. They were a little uncomfortable, but it was worth it! When I looked in the mirror, I actually scared myself a little bit. Success!

The Result

  • Costume: Thrift store nightgown, perfect with its stains.
  • Makeup: White face paint, green “vomit” makeup, and dark eyeshadow.
  • Wig: Cheap brown wig to match Regan’s hair.
  • Contacts: White-out contacts for that extra creepy factor.

Everyone at the Halloween party loved the costume! They said I looked just like the little girl from the movie. It was definitely a fun project, and I think I did a pretty good job, considering I’m no makeup artist or costume designer. I’ll probably try something a little more ambitious next year, but for a first attempt at a horror movie costume, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!
