Alright, so I saw this super cool thing the other day – a table that looked like a film reel! I’m a bit of a movie buff, and I thought it’d be a rad addition to my living room. So I did some digging, and it turns out, it’s not something you can just easily pick up at your local furniture store. I went down this rabbit hole of finding out how to get my hands on one, and let me tell you, it was a journey.
First, I hit up all the usual online shops, you know, the big ones. No dice. Then I started looking at those custom furniture places, the ones that make unique, one-off pieces. I found a few that had made something similar in the past, but nothing currently in stock.
I started thinking, maybe I could make this thing myself? I mean, how hard could it be, right? Famous last words. I started picturing myself, a modern-day Geppetto, crafting this masterpiece in my garage.
So, step one: find some film reels. Turns out, those aren’t exactly lying around everywhere either. I checked out some antique stores, flea markets, even called up a couple of old movie theaters. I finally managed to snag a couple of old, beat-up reels. Score!
Next up, the base. I figured I needed something sturdy, something that could hold the weight of the reel and, you know, not collapse when I put my coffee on it. I went through a few ideas – old barrels, some kind of industrial piping, even a stack of old books. I ended up finding a metal base at a salvage yard that I thought would work perfectly.
Then came the fun part – putting it all together. Let me tell you, it was a lot more trial and error than I anticipated. I had to figure out how to securely attach the reel to the base, how to make it level, how to make it look, well, not like a total mess.

- First attempt: Used some heavy-duty glue to attach the reel. Disaster. The reel fell off after like an hour. Plus, the glue made a huge mess.
- Second attempt: Tried drilling some holes and using bolts. This was slightly more successful, but the reel was wobbly and uneven. Not exactly the look I was going for.
- Third attempt: This is where it started to come together. I got some advice from a friend who’s good with this kind of stuff. He suggested using some metal brackets and welding them to the base. I don’t know how to weld, but thankfully, he did.
After a few more adjustments and a fresh coat of paint on the base, it was finally done! My very own, handmade film reel table. It’s not perfect, it’s a little rough around the edges, but I love it. It’s got character, it’s got a story, and it’s a pretty damn cool conversation starter.
So, that’s the saga of my film reel table. It was a bit of a project, but totally worth it in the end. Now I have a unique piece of furniture that reflects my love for movies, and I built it with my own two hands, with the help from my friend, well okay, more like my friend’s two hands. But I could say that I was involved in the process, right? Anyway, it’s the coolest table ever!

It’s right there in my living room, holding my popcorn bowl during movie nights. If you’re thinking about getting one, just be prepared for an adventure! Or, you know, maybe just find someone who makes them professionally. But where’s the fun in that?
