Oh, honey, you wanna know about them movin’ pictures in Rockland, Maine, do ya? Well, sit yourself down and let me tell ya what I know. This old town, it’s got a few places where you can see them flicks. Ain’t like the big city, but we make do.
Now, the big one, the one everyone talks about, is the Strand Theatre. It’s right there on Main Street, number 345. You can’t miss it. Been there for ages, longer than I can rightly remember. They show all sorts of things there, not just them new movies, but them old ones too. My friend, Bessie, she loves going there. She says it reminds her of when she was a young gal.
They got all kinds of stuff at the Strand. Not just movies. It is the only one left standing, you know, the others, there were three, they is gone now. The Strand, it stood the test of time, like me! They got them… what do you call them… live music shows and funny people, you know, comedians. And some fancy opera thing too, from that big city place, New York. I heard the Strand Theatre is a place for everyone.

They used to show a movie, then you had to wait a long time to see it at home. Now you can just get them things on your TV. Back in my day, you’d go to the picture show, and that was that. It was a big event, the whole family would go and they’d play for hours. You’d go on a Saturday night and see all your friends there. Now, not so much, I guess. People do their own thing.
There’s also that other place, up in Thomaston. It’s called Flagship Cinemas. I ain’t been there myself, but folks say it’s got a whole bunch of screens. Ten, I hear! Ten screens! Can you imagine? Must be mighty confusin’. But they show all them new movies there, the ones with the loud noises and the fast cars. Young folks seem to like it.
Now, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ a little different, somethin’ not so, you know, boisterous, then you might like them art films. They show them at the Strand too, sometimes. They ain’t my cup of tea, but some folks like ’em. I don’t know what the young folk see in them, not like the classics with all them handsome actors, you know?

This town, Rockland, it’s a nice place. Got them lighthouses, you know. Pretty to look at. And them little shops, they’re cute. People come from all over to see ’em. I remember when I was a little girl, we used to go to the movies all the time. It was a real treat. We’d get all dressed up and go into town. It was a big deal. I’d see all my friends, all the family went to the pictures. And we’d watch the movie, and then we’d go get some ice cream. It was just like the movies. Those were the good old days. Now, you just stay home and watch it on your TV. Not the same, not the same at all. You used to have to wait a while to see a movie at home, after it was in the theater. People liked the Strand, cause it was big and nice. Some people, like Bessie, they really like that sort of thing.
But, you know, times change. People change. Movies change. But the Strand, it’s still there. And that’s somethin’. A little piece of the past, still hangin’ on. And that’s a good thing, I reckon.
