I have never understood why Hollywood will waste tens of millions of dollars on CGI effects that still look obviously fake, when, armed with just a good story yet a more limited effects budget, the film can be just as entertaining. It is a bonus that filmmakers can hone their skills on low-budget independent films while we can enjoy them. Most of the biggest names in Hollywood started in low-budget filmmaking, like James Cameron, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and countless others. Roger Corman, the king of budget films, ran a virtual master class in low-cost filmmaking, cutting the teeth of some of Hollywood's biggest directors, writers, cinemaphotographers and crews.
