So, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to make tech easier for the older folks in our lives. You know, my mom, she’s always asking me how to use this and that on her phone. And it got me thinking about Netflix. It’s a great service, but it can be a bit tricky to navigate if you’re not used to all this streaming stuff. So, I decided to dive in and figure out how to make Netflix super user-friendly for senior citizens. Here’s what I did.
Signing Up
First things first, I helped my mom get signed up. I went over to her house and showed her how to get to their website and create an account. We picked a simple password, something she could easily remember. I wrote it down for her, just in case. Then, we had to choose a plan. I explained the differences, and she went with the basic one, which is more than enough for her needs. We entered her payment info, and boom, she was in!
Setting Up a Profile
Next, I created a profile just for her. That way, her shows wouldn’t get mixed up with mine. I made the profile name really obvious, just her first name. It makes things easier when she’s logging in. One less thing to confuse her.
Browsing and Finding Shows
This was the fun part. I showed her how to browse through the different categories. She loves documentaries and old movies, so I pointed those out. I showed her how to use the search bar, too. We typed in a few of her favorite actors, and she was amazed at all the options that popped up. It was like a kid in a candy store, she was so excited to see all these old shows she used to love.
Making It Easy to Watch
I made sure the font size on the screen was big enough for her to read comfortably. We adjusted the settings so that the subtitles were on by default, just in case she needed them. I also showed her how to pause, rewind, and fast-forward. Simple things, but they make a big difference.
Keeping It Simple
Here are a few things I did to make Netflix even easier for her:
- Created a “My List”: I added a bunch of shows and movies I knew she’d like to her “My List.” That way, she wouldn’t have to search around too much. She could just go straight to her list and pick something.
- Showed her the “Continue Watching” row: This is a lifesaver. It shows all the shows she’s currently watching, so she can easily pick up where she left off.
- Explained the ratings: I showed her how the star ratings work, so she could get an idea of how good a show is before watching it.
The Result
Honestly, it was a bit of work setting it all up, but it was totally worth it. Now, my mom is a Netflix pro. She calls me up all the time to tell me about the new shows she’s watching. It’s really opened up a whole new world of entertainment for her, and she’s loving it. Plus, it gives us something new to talk about, which is always nice. She even started inviting her friends over for Netflix movie nights! It makes her happy, and that’s the most important part. I really hope this can help other people who are trying to make Netflix easier for their older relatives.
