The most anticipated video game release of 2025 has been delayed until mid-2026.
Take-Two Interactive says that Grand Theft Auto VI, the sixth installment of the blockbuster franchise, will now be released on May 26, 2026. The game had been scheduled to be released later this year.
Rockstar Games, the Take-Two owned studio that is responsible for the GTA franchise, announced the news Friday.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” Rockstar said in a statement. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
The delay will impact Take-Two’s financials, with the game expected to turbocharge its earnings. That said, Take-Two told investors Friday that it “reiterated its expectations that the company will achieve sequential increases in, and record levels of, Net Bookings in Fiscal 2026 and 2027.” May of 2026 falls into the company’s fiscal 2027.
“We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations,” said Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO for Take-Two Interactive. “While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence. As we continue to release our phenomenal pipeline, we expect to deliver a multi-year period of growth in our business and enhanced value for our shareholders.”
Details on GTA6 remain scarce, though it will be set in and around Vice City, the GTA universe’s version of Miami, Florida. Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, while GTA 4 was released in 2008, underscoring the long development cycle for the open world franchise, which relies on cinematic flair to engage players.
