Alright, alright, lemme tell ya ’bout this Detroit horror movie thing. Don’t know much about them fancy city folk and their picture shows, but I heard some things, ya know? Seen some things on that there… whatchamacallit… the electric picture box. Yeah, that’s it.
So, this Detroit horror movie, they say it’s scary. Scarier than a black cat crossing your path on Friday the 13th, they say. I ain’t scared easy, mind you. Lived through the Depression, seen folks fightin’ over a loaf of bread. Now that was scary. But these movies, they got their own kind of spooky.
One fella was talkin’ ‘bout a movie where folks be messin’ with dead bodies. Nekro-somethin’, he called it. Said it was made way back in the 80s. Imagine that! Fiddlin’ with dead folks. Don’t sound right, does it? Back in my day, we buried the dead and left ‘em be. No good comes from stirrin’ up what’s meant to be at rest.
- They got movies ‘bout witches and goblins too.
- And things that ain’t human, but look like it.
- One was called “Wildling”, they said.
Heard it was on that Net-thingy, where all them young’uns watch their shows now. Said it was about some kinda creature, half-human, half-somethin’ else. Sounds like the kinda stories old man Johnson used to tell down by the creek, ‘ceptin’ these stories got pictures and fancy sounds.
Then there’s these “hidden gems” they talk about. Like findin’ a shiny penny in a pile of dirt. Movies that didn’t get much attention, but are spooky as all get out. They say some of them go way back, to the 1920s! Can you believe it? Movies that old still scarin’ folks. Guess fear never gets old, huh?
Some of these movies, they ain’t got big budgets, ya know? Made with just a little bit of money, but they still manage to scare the pants off ya. Like that “Blair Witch” thing. Folks runnin’ around in the woods with a shaky camera. Didn’t see much, but it was the not seein’ that got to ya. Your mind starts playin’ tricks on ya, makin’ ya see things that ain’t really there.
And then there’s them futuristic scary movies. The ones with robots and computers takin’ over. One fella was tellin’ me ‘bout a movie where a man’s got parts of him replaced with machines. “Upgrade”, or somethin’ like that. Sounds like somethin’ outta one of them science fiction books, but scarier. ‘Cause it makes ya think, ya know? Makes ya think about what’s comin’ down the road.
Detroit, they say, it’s a good place for these kinda stories. A city with a past, with secrets buried deep. Just like them old houses with creaky floors and drafty windows. You never know what’s lurkin’ in the shadows. And that’s what makes a good horror movie, I reckon. It ain’t just about the blood and guts, it’s about the unknown. The things ya can’t see, but ya feel. That cold shiver down your spine, that pricklin’ on the back of your neck. That’s what gets ya.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a good scare, maybe give one of these Detroit horror movies a try. Just don’t blame me if ya can’t sleep with the lights off afterwards. And remember, it’s all just make-believe. But sometimes, make-believe can feel awful real, can’t it?
Spooky season is comin’ up, they say. Time for pumpkins and ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Guess that’s when these movies really shine. Me? I’ll stick to my porch swing and my cup of chamomile tea. That’s spooky enough for this old gal.
