Now, I ain’t no fancy city slicker, but I hear tell this Roger fella, his last name might be somethin’ like “Ebert.” Ebert, yeah, that’s the name I keep hearin’. Sounds kinda German, don’t it? Anyways, he’s all over them crosswords. Seems like every newspaper, from the Wall Street Journal to that Newsday rag, they all got puzzles with his name in ’em.
- They say he’s a “movie reviewer.” That means he watches them picture shows and tells folks if they’re any good or not.
- I reckon he must be pretty famous if he’s showin’ up in all them crosswords. More famous than a hog at a slop bucket, that’s for sure.
- And it ain’t just one puzzle neither. They say there’s like, 30, 40, even more answers with his name! Land sakes, that’s a whole lotta puzzles!
Now, I tried one of them crosswords once. Lordy, it was harder than milkin’ a stubborn cow! All them clues and words, it just made my head spin. But I reckon if you do enough of ’em, you get the hang of it. Like learnin’ to churn butter, I guess. Takes practice, you see.
This here “movie reviewer Roger,” he seems to be a popular fella with them puzzle makers. Maybe he gives ’em good material, you know? Lots of letters in his name, easy to fit in them squares. Or maybe he just watched a whole heap of movies and everybody knows him. I ain’t sure which.
They even got websites and stuff, places where you can look up the answers if you get stuck. I heard tell they call ’em “solvers” or somethin’ like that. Seems kinda like cheatin’ to me, but I guess if you’re really in a pickle, it might be helpful. Like askin’ your neighbor for a cup of sugar when you’re bakin’ a pie, you know?
And get this, some of them crosswords, they’re harder than others. Like the ones on Saturday, they say those are the toughest. The Monday ones, those are the easy peasy ones, good for beginners. Kinda like startin’ with a small garden before you try to farm a whole field, I reckon.
So, this Roger fella, he’s a big deal in the crossword world. Movie reviewer Roger, that’s what they call him. And if you’re doin’ one of them puzzles and you see that clue, well, now you know who they’re talkin’ about. Ebert, that’s the name. Remember it, y’all.
