So, I saw this new Ninja Turtles movie, “Mutant Mayhem,” was making the rounds online. Lots of folks were talking about it, and you know, the usual internet stuff – some people loved it, some people hated it, and some were just shouting about whether it was “woke” or not. I figured, might as well jump in and see what all the fuss was about.

First off, I grabbed my laptop and started digging around. I wanted to get a feel for what people were saying before I even watched the movie. Typed in “is the new ninja turtles movie woke” into the search bar and bam! Tons of articles, forum posts, and social media rants popped up. It was a mess, I tell ya!

I started clicking through some of the search results. One thing that caught my eye was this comment: “Just an FYI to those in the comment section that are surprised that April is a black character in this film.” Okay, so they changed April’s race. That’s not new in movies these days.

  • Lots of folks were bringing up this “woke” term. Apparently, it’s a big deal for some people. I saw one guy saying, “With the release of the new movie, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, there has been much discussion about whether the film is “woke.” This term.” Seemed like this was the main thing people were arguing about.
  • Then there was this other comment I found, talking about the story: “However, if this movie was meant to keep the turtle lore alive for future generations.” This got me thinking, maybe they’re just trying to update the story for a new audience? Makes sense, right?
  • But then, I stumbled upon a totally different opinion. This person wrote, “30-mins in and had to stop watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem. I don’t know what Hollywood got against TMNT.” Wow, that’s harsh! They didn’t even finish the movie. I had to know what made them quit so early.

I kept reading and found more details about the movie itself. Turns out, there were some changes to the story, especially with Splinter, the Turtles’ rat dad. Someone mentioned, “However, at some point before its official release, some over-dubbing was done, and the grotesque monster for whom Splinter falls is clearly and repeatedly referred to as female/she. So, while everything behind the scenes was woke, this aspect of the finished product was not.” Sounds like they changed Splinter’s love interest? Interesting…

After all that reading, I finally decided to watch the movie myself. I wanted to form my own opinion, you know? So, I settled in, made some popcorn, and hit play.

My Thoughts After Watching

Honestly? It wasn’t that bad. It was actually pretty fun! The animation was cool, the Turtles were their usual goofy selves, and yeah, there were some changes, but it didn’t ruin the whole thing for me. April being black didn’t bother me one bit. And the Splinter stuff? It was a little weird, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker.

So, is the movie “woke”? I don’t know, man. Maybe? Does it matter? Not to me. I just wanted to see some ninja turtles kick some butt, and that’s what I got. Maybe people are just overthinking it. I think it’s pretty cool that they’re trying new things with a classic story. Keeps it fresh, you know?

In the end, I guess it all comes down to what you’re looking for in a Ninja Turtles movie. If you want the exact same thing you saw in the 90s, you might be disappointed. But if you’re open to something a little different, you might just enjoy it. I sure did! At least, most of it. That Splinter love story part, yeah, that was still pretty strange.
