“You feel that…? That’s your family, that’s your blood.” Netflix has revealed the second official trailer for the film The Piano Lesson, an adaptation of the August Wilson play. This first premiered at the 2024 Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals a few months ago, and is already playing in theaters now before Netflix for streaming soon. It’s produced by Denzel Washington, featuring his son John David Washington, directed by his other son Malcolm Washington, making his feature directorial debut. The film follows the lives of the Charles family as they deal with themes of family legacy and more, in deciding what to do with an heirloom, the family piano. Adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork, this explores the inter-generational dynamics of identity, resilience and transcendence – revealing startling truths about how we perceive the past and who gets to define our legacy. With an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Gail Bean, Jerrika Hinton, with Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins. Reviews have been mixed-to-positive – saying it has “direction that never finds a thematic through line or harnesses a consistent energy.”

Adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork, The Piano Lesson explores the inter-generational dynamics of identity, resilience and transcendence – revealing startling truths about how we perceive the past and who gets to define our legacy. A battle is brewing in the Charles Household. At the center stands a prized heirloom piano tearing the two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Danielle Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Samuel Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past. The Piano Lesson is directed by newcomer American filmmaker Malcolm Washington, Denzel Washington’s son, now making his feature directorial debut after one short previously. The screenplay is by Virgil Williams & Malcolm Washington, adapted from the play of the same name written by August Wilson. Produced by Todd Black and Denzel Washington. With music by Alexandre Desplat. Netflix will debut The Piano Lesson in select US theaters on November 8th, 2024, then streaming on Netflix starting November 22nd just before Thanksgiving this fall. Look good?
