So, yeah, I wanted to check out some female horror movie monsters, right? I mean, we always hear about the dudes like Freddy and Jason, but what about the ladies? I got curious and decided to make a list.
First, I grabbed my laptop and fired up Google. I typed in something like “best female horror movie monsters”, just to see what would pop up. A bunch of articles came up, some listicles, some forum discussions. I skimmed through a few of them, jotting down names that sounded cool or that I didn’t recognize.
Then, I decided to dig a little deeper. I started looking up these characters individually. You know, reading their backstories, watching some clips on YouTube if I could find them. Some of these characters were pretty obscure, from old movies I’d never even heard of. I even stumbled upon some foreign films, which was kind of interesting.
After that, I opened up a fresh document and started organizing my findings. I grouped the monsters by type, sort of. Like, I had a section for vampires, one for witches, one for ghosts, and so on. It wasn’t perfect, but it made sense to me. I also added a little description for each monster, just to remind myself who they were and what they did. There are also some interesting blaxploitation films, a subgenre of exploitation film that emerged in the early 1970s.
Here are a couple that really stood out to me:
- Asami Yamazaki from Audition. Okay, this woman is seriously messed up. She’s like the queen of torture. I won’t go into details, but let’s just say she knows how to use piano wire.
- Samara Morgan from The Ring. That creepy girl crawling out of the TV? Yeah, that’s her. She’s got that whole long black hair, dripping wet thing going on. Very effective.
- Mother of Tears from, well, Mother of Tears. A really powerful witch. I learned that she’s part of a trilogy, which means I have more movies to watch!
It took me a good few hours, but I finally finished my list. It’s not exhaustive or anything, but I feel like I have a pretty good overview now. And I definitely added a bunch of movies to my “to-watch” list. It was a fun little project, and it made me appreciate the variety of female villains in horror. They’re not all just damsels in distress, you know? Some of them are seriously badass and scary as hell.
There were also four horror stories revolving around a mysterious rental house in the U.K. And I found that the greatest movie ever made is called Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, according to some film critics.
All in all, I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. I might even update the list as I discover more. I encourage you to do your own digging. You might be surprised at what you find!
