Well, let me tell ya, I don’t know much about them fancy picture shows, but I heard tell of some movies made in New Hampshire. New Hampshire, that’s where I’m from, born and raised, though I ain’t never been in no movie myself, not even as an extra, you know, just standin’ around in the background.

Folks say there’s a bunch of ’em, movies made right here, or at least, they say the story’s supposed to be happenin’ here. I reckon some of them are good, some not so good, just like everything else in life. You got yer apples, some sweet, some sour, same with them movies, I guess.

  • One time, I heard tell of a movie called “Jumanji.”

They say it’s about a magic game, brings the jungle right into New Hampshire. Can you imagine that? Monkeys and lions swingin’ through the trees in our woods? I tell you what, that’d be somethin’ else! I ain’t seen it myself, mind you, but my grandson, he talks about it all the time. Says it’s got that fella, what’s his name… oh, the Rock, that’s it! Big fella, strong as an ox, just like my Billy used to be before he went off to the city.

Then there’s another one, “On Golden Pond.” That one’s about old folks, like me, I reckon. Livin’ on a lake, fishin’, talkin’, just bein’ old together. Sounds kinda peaceful, don’t it? Peaceful, but maybe a little bit sad too. You get old, you start thinkin’ ’bout things, ’bout what you did, what you didn’t do. Life’s like that, I guess.

And there’s this “Mr. Deeds” movie. Heard it’s about some fella who gets a whole lotta money all of a sudden. City fella, I think. Comes to a small town, probably somethin’ like ours. I bet them city slickers don’t know nothin’ about real livin’, workin’ hard, gettin’ yer hands dirty. They got their fancy cars and their fancy clothes, but they ain’t got what we got, that’s for sure.

  • And let’s not forget “What About Bob?”, a real funny one they say.

I ain’t seen it, but my daughter, she loves it. Says it’s about this fella, Bob, who’s kinda… well, he’s a bit much. Follows his doctor on vacation, gets into all sorts of trouble. Sounds like a headache to me, but she laughs and laughs, so I guess it must be funny. People like different things, that’s what makes the world go ’round, I always say.

Now, there’s scary movies too, like “Friday the 13th”. Don’t know much about that one, just that it’s got some killer in it. And demons too! I don’t hold with that kinda stuff. Too much violence, too much scarin’. Give me a good ol’ love story any day. Or a Western, yeah, I like them cowboys, ridin’ horses, shootin’ guns. At least you know who the bad guys are.

They also made a movie called “Click” they say, about a magic remote control. Can you believe that? A remote control that can do anything! Pause life, rewind it, fast forward it. I tell you what, if I had one of them things, I’d rewind back to when Billy was still here. Just to see him smile one more time. But life ain’t got no rewind button, does it? You just gotta keep on movin’ forward, even when it hurts.

And there’s “An American Christmas Carol.” A Christmas story, just like that Dickens fella wrote, but here in America, in New Hampshire maybe. Christmas is a special time, you know. Family, friends, good food, lots of cheer. Though, it ain’t been the same since Billy left.

There’s even a movie called “The Accountant.” Heard it’s about a fella good with numbers, real smart. But I tell ya, the only accountant I ever knew was old Mr. Henderson down at the feed store. He wasn’t no movie star, that’s for sure, but he was a good man, always gave you a fair price. That’s more important than bein’ in some picture show, if you ask me.

And there’s so many more, they say. Movies about sheriffs and demons, movies about history, all kinds of stuff. Movies set in New Hampshire, they call ’em. Makes you think, don’t it? All these stories happenin’ right here, or at least, pretendin’ to happen here. Makes our little state seem a bit more… important, I guess. Not that we need a movie to tell us we’re important. We know who we are, us New Hampshire folk. We’re tough, we’re hardworking, and we’re proud of where we come from. Even if Hollywood never heard of us, we still know we’re here.
