Well, hello there! Let me tell ya somethin’ about this here “crowdsourced movie review crossword” thing. I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I reckon I can figure things out same as anybody else.
So, this crossword thing, it’s like one of them puzzles, you know? Like them things in the newspapers. But this one’s special ’cause it’s about movies and what folks think of ’em. Crowdsourced, that’s a big word, ain’t it? Means a whole bunch of people puttin’ their heads together, I guess. Like when we had that barn raisin’ last summer, everybody pitchin’ in. So, this crossword, it’s filled with words about movies and what regular folks say about them.
Now, I seen my share of movies. Back in the day, we’d go to the picture show on Saturdays, cost a nickel, I think. They was all black and white then, but they was good. Nowadays, you got all sorts of colors and fancy stuff, but sometimes the stories ain’t as good. But that’s just my opinion, and that’s what this crossword is all about, ain’t it? Opinions. What people think. You know, like if a movie is good or bad, if it makes you laugh or cry, or if it’s just plain silly.
The crossword has these clues, little hints that tell you what word to put in. Some of them are easy, like who starred in a movie, or what the movie was called. But some of ’em, they can be tricky. They might ask you about some fancy word a movie critic used, or some obscure detail that only a real movie buff would know. But that’s part of the fun, I guess, tryin’ to figure things out.
- Like, they might ask you for the name of a fella who made movies a long time ago, even though he’s dead now. Something about nightmares and stuff. That reminds me of old Mr. Henderson down the road, he always had them nightmares after he ate too much sausage before bed. But I don’t think that’s what they mean. They probably mean someone fancy, like that fella they mentioned in one of them newspaper thingies. Franz somethin’ or other, died a long time ago, but people still talkin’ about him.
- Then, they might ask you what you call a fella who makes maps. Well, that’s easy. It’s a… a… Shoot, I know this one. It’s on the tip of my tongue… Oh yeah, “Cartographer”! Seen it in one of them books my grandson leaves laying around. Sounded like a big word to me then, still does now.
- And then there’s the main thing, this “crowdsourced movie review” website. That’s where a whole bunch of folks go to write down what they thought of a movie. It’s like a big ol’ gossip session, but about movies. Seems like there are a lot of them websites out there. They say the crossword solvers find lots of answers, 30 or 40 even, must be a lot of movie websites then. I reckon some of them are more popular than others. I heard someone mention that Chicago Sun-Times, or that Universal Crossword thing, they sometimes use this kinda clue. It makes me think them crossword puzzles must be popular everywhere, even in the big cities, not just in our little town. They say them puzzles help you learn new words too. I guess that’s true. Lord knows, I’m learnin’ a few new ones today just talkin’ about this thing.
So, putting it all together, you gotta use them clues to fill in the squares in the crossword. And when you get it all right, it’s a pretty good feelin’. Like when you finally get that stubborn jar of pickles open. You know, you accomplished somethin’. And maybe along the way, you learned a new word or two, or remembered somethin’ about a movie you saw a long time ago.
It seems like these crossword puzzles ain’t just for city folk with fancy learnin’. Even an old gal like me can have a go at it. And that’s the beauty of it, ain’t it? Bringin’ people together, gettin’ them thinkin’, and sharin’ a little bit of fun. Just like them movies themselves.
So, next time you see one of them crossword puzzles, don’t be scared. Give it a try. You might surprise yourself. And if it’s about movies, well, that’s even better. ‘Cause everybody loves a good movie, and everybody’s got an opinion.
