Well, let me tell ya, those darn classic horror movie posters, they sure know how to make your hair stand on end, even if you ain’t got much hair left like me! They ain’t like them fancy new posters, all slick and shiny. Nope, these old ones, they got a somethin’ special, a somethin’ that just…gets to ya.
I remember seein’ some of them posters back in the day, hangin’ outside the picture show. Big, bold letters screamin’ out the movie title, and pictures…oh, them pictures! Faces all twisted up in fear, monsters with teeth like razors, and colors so bright they almost hurt your eyes. Take that “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” one, for example. Folks say it’s the first real horror movie, and that poster…it’s somethin’ else. All pointy and weird, with shadows that make you think somethin’ bad is just waitin’ around the corner.
And them mannequins! Lord have mercy, them mannequins give me the creeps. I saw one of them movies, “The Night Stalker,” on that newfangled TV thing my grandson got. Had a scene with them mannequins… made my skin crawl, it did. Then there’s that “Conjuring 2” picture, another one with a creepy mannequin. Seems like them movie makers know how to use them things to scare the pants off ya.
- Scary faces: They always got them scary faces, grinnin’ or screamin’. Makes you wonder what kind of awful things are happenin’ in the movie.
- Monsters: Big, hairy monsters, or slimy ones, or ones that look like they just crawled outta the grave. They ain’t pretty, that’s for sure.
- Bright colors: Lots of red, like blood, and black, like the night, and sometimes green, like somethin’ rotten. They sure know how to pick colors that make you feel uneasy.
Some folks, they like them new horror movies, the ones with all the jump scares and fancy special effects. But me? I like the old-timey stuff. Them posters, they tell you what you’re in for. They ain’t tryin’ to trick ya. They show you the monster right there, plain as day. And that’s what makes ‘em so scary.
They even made fun of them scary movies later on, with them “Scary Movie” pictures. My grandson made me watch one, said it was funny. It was, I guess, but it still made me think about them old posters, them originals. They poked fun at movies like “The Exorcist,” and “Signs,” and that one with the creepy well, “The Ring.” Even made fun of “The Grudge” and “Saw,” and a whole bunch of others. But even with the jokes, them original posters, they still got that power to scare ya.
People are still makin’ these posters, ya know. Not just for the old movies, but new ones too. They try to make ’em look old-timey, with that same kinda feel. ‘Cause folks like that look, that feelin’ of dread you get when you see a good horror poster. They call ’em classic horror movie posters for a reason, I reckon. They stand the test of time, they do.
And they ain’t just posters, some folks collect ‘em, like they’re some kinda treasure. I saw my neighbor’s boy, he’s got a whole room full of ‘em. Says they’re art. Well, I guess they are, in a way. Art that makes you wanna hide under the covers!
From “Psycho” to “The Exorcist,” them posters, they’ve seen it all. They’ve been around for ages, and I bet they’ll be around for ages to come. ‘Cause folks always gonna wanna be scared, and them classic horror movie posters, they sure know how to do the job. They use all sorts of things, like hauntin’ images and bright colors, and they put ’em together in a way that just…well, it just works. They show you just enough to get your imagination goin’, and that’s the scariest thing of all.
So, next time you see one of them old posters, take a good look. Don’t just glance at it and walk away. Look at the details, the colors, the faces. Let it sink in. And then, maybe, you’ll understand why an old woman like me still gets a shiver down her spine when she sees a good classic horror movie poster.
