Okay, so I saw this “boycott Netflix Israel” thing trending, and I got curious. I wanted to see what it was all about and if it was something I could actually, realistically do. Here’s how it went down.

Figuring Out What’s Up

First, I needed to understand why people were calling for a boycott. I did some digging. I read articles and found a lot of discussions.

It was messy. Lots of opinions, lots of history. The basic gist seemed to be about Netflix’s content and whether some shows were seen as promoting a particular viewpoint on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I wanted to avoid getting sucked into the arguments, and find the right action for me to do.

My Netflix Habits

I had to think about how I even use Netflix. I realized I mostly watch a specific set of shows, like, maybe 5 or 6 things regularly. I’m one of those people who rewatches stuff a lot.

The “Test Run”

I figured a full-on boycott would be tough. So, I started with a small test. I decided not to watch Netflix for a whole week.

  • Day 1-3: Kinda annoying. I kept reaching for the remote out of habit. I found myself doing some old stuff, and catching up my reading.
  • Day 4-5: Easier. Started watching other free online content. Started to remember I had other hobbies.
  • Day 6-7: Didn’t even miss it that much. Realized how much time I’d been passively consuming, you know?

Bigger Steps

After the week, I felt… good? I hadn’t caved. It showed me I could do without Netflix if I really wanted to. So, I thought about bigger steps:

  • Cancelling my subscription? that can be done at anytime.

My Decision (For Now)

I decided to do one thing for now. I cancelled my Netflix subscription. I’m putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak, I still need to get informed.

This whole boycott thing, it’s a personal choice. What I did learn is that it’s good to be aware of how your money is being used, and whether you’re okay with that. Taking a break from Netflix, even just for a week, made me think more critically about what I consume and why. That, in itself, was a win.
