Okay, so I’ve been freezing my butt off in my apartment lately, especially near the windows. It got me thinking, does that window film stuff actually work to keep the cold out? I decided to put it to the test.
The Prep Work
First, I went and grabbed a roll of window film from the local hardware store. There were a bunch of different kinds, but I just got a basic clear one that claimed to help with insulation. I also made sure I had a spray bottle, some soapy water, a squeegee, and a utility knife – apparently, those are all needed for this project.
Getting Down to Business
I started by cleaning my windows really well. Any dust or grime can mess up the film, so I made sure they were sparkling. Then, I measured my windows and cut the film to size, leaving a little extra around the edges. I can be pretty clumsy, better safe than sorry!
Applying the Film
This is where things got a little tricky. I sprayed the window with the soapy water – it needs to be pretty wet. Then, I carefully peeled the backing off the film and stuck it to the window, starting from the top. The soapy water lets you slide it around to get it in the right spot. Next, I used the squeegee to push out all the air bubbles and extra water, working from the center out to the edges. I Trimmed off the excess film with the utility knife, and voilà! One window down.
Did It Work?
Honestly, I was pretty surprised. I did one window and left the one next to it bare to compare. After a few hours I can feel the difference.
The window with the film felt noticeably less cold to the touch. I even held my hand up to both windows, and the draft was way less noticeable on the filmed one.
My Verdict
- Easier than I thought: The whole process was a bit fiddly, but totally doable, even for a DIY newbie like me.
- Real Results: I definitely felt a difference. My apartment seems to be holding heat better, and those icy drafts are much reduced.
