Now, let me tell you about this movie “Risen” that I saw. It’s a story ’bout a Roman soldier, a big ol’ guy who’s been ordered by Pontius Pilate himself to go look for this Jesus fellow after he was crucified. You know, all them rumors going around that folks been seeing him after he died, and this soldier’s job is to go find out what’s true, and what ain’t.
Now, don’t you go expectin’ no high-falutin’ theology or preachin’ in this movie. Nah, it ain’t like them other films like that “Passion of the Christ” where they just hit you over the head with all that violent stuff. No, this one’s a lot easier to watch, ‘cept for the part where you feel like you’re right there in all that mess with ‘em. It’s got some real good pictures, too. Nice lookin’ film, even though it don’t try to hit you too hard with all the bloody stuff. It’s simple, straightforward, and just goes along nice and easy like a quiet afternoon walk.
The main fella, this Roman soldier, he starts off not believing in nothing. Don’t matter what people tell him, he’s not havin’ none of it. But the more he digs around, the more strange things start happenin’. He sees things that make him think, ‘maybe there’s somethin’ to all this after all’. Now, this soldier’s a skeptic, you know. He ain’t convinced at first, and that makes it all the more interestin’. He don’t believe no miracle happened, but he sure wants to figure out what’s goin’ on.
Now, I gotta say, it’s one of them movies where you don’t get all them juicy details of the Bible story. If you’re lookin’ for something that’s word-for-word from the Good Book, well, this ain’t it. But it gives ya an idea of what might’ve happened, through the eyes of someone who didn’t believe none of it at first. Ain’t no history lesson here, just a suggestion of what it could’ve been like for that Roman soldier. It’s got a feel like a mystery, a real suspenseful kinda thing as he tries to find out what’s true and what’s just folks talkin’ nonsense.
The first half of the movie, I tell ya, it’s like watchin’ one of them detective stories. The soldier’s investigatin’ and lookin’ for clues, just like in them crime shows where they’s always huntin’ down some crook. It don’t get too bogged down in preachin’ or tryin’ to make you feel guilty or none of that. It just goes along, bit by bit, tryin’ to figure out what happened after Jesus got crucified. It’s not real fast-paced, but it keeps you watchin’.
And I tell ya, one thing I didn’t expect was how important this fella, Joseph of Arimathea, becomes in the story. Now, you know Joseph, he’s the one who took Jesus’ body and put it in the tomb. But this movie, well, they make him out to be a real big deal. They twist things up a bit, though, ’cause they show him in a different light, like he’s somebody else tryin’ to keep his identity hidden. Kinda makes ya wonder what might’ve really gone on behind the scenes.
Some folks might say this ain’t a real account of what happened, and they’d be right. It ain’t no true-to-the-Bible story. But what it does do is give you a taste of what it might’ve felt like for a Roman soldier, someone who didn’t believe in none of that talk about Jesus. And that’s the beauty of it. It ain’t preachy, it ain’t tryin’ to convince ya of anything, but it sure does make you think. You start wonderin’ about all them things you’ve heard, and whether there’s somethin’ more to this story than meets the eye.
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ that ain’t gonna bash ya over the head with religion, but still gives you a bit of a feel for them days after the crucifixion, well, this movie might be just the thing. It’s worth watchin’, especially if you like a good mystery, and a little bit of history thrown in. And if you’re one of them folks who just likes a good movie with a story that makes ya think, you won’t be disappointed.
In the end, I’d say “Risen” is a good watch. It’s not perfect, but it’s somethin’ different. It don’t try to tell you what to believe, but it gives ya a good ol’ fashioned mystery that keeps you interested till the very end. So, give it a watch, and see what you think. I reckon it might surprise ya, in a good way.
