Top Famous Hats from Movies: From Indiana Jones to Oddjob

Well, let me tell ya somethin’, there’s all sorts of hats in them movies and shows, but some of ’em really stick out, y’know? The kind of hats you just can’t forget once ya see ’em. Now, you ever seen Indiana Jones? Oh, that man with his fedora, he ain’t complete without it! That’s right, that wide-brimmed hat he’s always wearin’ while runnin’ ’round dodgin’ danger and treasure huntin’. I reckon that fedora’s just as much a part of him as his leather jacket!

But don’t go thinkin’ it’s just Indiana that has the memorable headgear, no sir! Take a look at the baseball cap. Ain’t no one who don’t know it, right? Them caps started out in baseball games back in the 1800s, but now everybody’s wearin’ ’em. They say it came from a baseball team in Brooklyn called the Excelsiors, and they wore it to keep the sun outta their eyes while playin’. Now, you got folks wearin’ them baseball caps everywhere, not just on the field but at the grocery store, the park, you name it. Funny how somethin’ that started on a baseball field could become a worldwide symbol.

And then, well, we can’t forget about that fancy bowler hat Oddjob wears in that movie Goldfinger. Now that ain’t no ordinary hat, no ma’am. It’s got a sharp edge, and let me tell ya, Oddjob sure knows how to use it! That hat’s got a blade around the brim, and it ain’t for just showin’ off. You can’t help but remember him when you think of it.

Now, talkin’ about hats reminds me of the old westerns, y’know? There’s this one hat that started it all for them cowboys, called the “Boss of the Plains”. Big ol’ hat with a wide brim. Looked like it could protect ya from the sun and any wild critter that came your way. That style got copied all over the place, but I reckon the one that really stuck was the high-crowned one that had that crease down the front. Now, when you see a cowboy hat with that crease, you just know it’s a cowboy. It don’t matter if it’s on a TV show or in a movie, you see that hat, and you think of tough guys ridin’ horses and fightin’ outlaws.

But, hold on, I gotta tell ya about one more. Y’all remember Marshal Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke, don’t ya? Played by James Arness. Well, that hat he wore was just as important as his badge. A cowboy hat with that special look that just says, “I’m the law, and I’m here to keep the peace.” Ain’t no cowboy show without that hat, y’know? Makes ya think of the wild west days when things weren’t so easy, and the hat was a sign of respect and authority.

Well, there ya have it. Hats ain’t just for keepin’ yer head warm or outta the sun. They tell stories, and they sure do make those movie characters stick in our minds. Whether it’s Indiana Jones with his fedora, Oddjob with his sharp bowler, or them good ol’ cowboys, hats are mighty important in film, and we ain’t likely to forget ’em anytime soon.
