Okay, so I’ve been wanting to spice up our game nights, right? And I’m a huge horror movie buff. So, naturally, I thought, “Why not combine the two?” I went down this rabbit hole of trying to find a Trivial Pursuit: Horror Movie Edition.
First, I checked all the usual spots – you know, the big online stores, even some local game shops. No dice. It was like this thing was a ghost – everyone’s heard of it, but nobody’s actually seen it. I mean they have like a million different versions of Trivial Pursuit, but nothing horror specific beyond a few expansion packs.
Then I started getting crafty. I figured, “Okay, if I can’t buy it, I’ll make it!”
The DIY Route
I found this old Trivial Pursuit game at a garage sale – total score, only cost me a couple of bucks. The board was a bit beat up, but the pieces were all there. That was my starting point.
- Step 1: Brain Dump. I grabbed a notebook and just started listing every horror movie I could think of, from the classics like “Halloween” and “The Exorcist” to some more obscure stuff. I even threw in some horror TV shows for good measure.
- Step 2: Question Time. This was the real grind. I had to come up with questions for each movie, and in six different categories! I went for the traditional Trivial Pursuit categories, and did this.
- Step 3: Category HeadacheI came up with these categories:
- Monsters & Mayhem
- Slasher Central
- Behind The Screams
- Supernatural
- Locations
- Step 4: Card Creation. I typed up all the questions and answers, printed them out, and glued them onto some card stock. It took forever, but it was kinda therapeutic, in a weird, obsessive way. I’m pretty sure my printer hates me now.
- Step 5: Board Revamp. I found some cool horror-themed scrapbook paper and used it to cover up the original board. I even printed out some little horror movie icons to replace the colored wedges. Gotta have that attention to detail!
Seriously it took, like, a whole weekend, and several evenings after work. I’m also not the best at arts and crafts.
Finally, I got to test it out with my friends. And man, was it worth it! We had a blast. Some of the questions were super tough, which led to some hilarious arguments, and the look of the board just set the mood perfectly.
It’s not perfect, sure. It’s a bit rough around the edges, and I’m sure I’ll keep adding to it and tweaking it. But it’s ours. And it’s proof that sometimes, the best things are the ones you make yourself.
